If you’re looking for a stylishly-written analysis of a key period in professional wrestling, look no further than Titan Screwed. Titan Screwed is a well-written sequel in the Titan series, building on the first two books but more than capable of being read by itself. Astute fans will know by the title that the year being reviewed this time around is 1997, the year of the Montreal Screwjob and arguably the turning point in the Monday Night War. Like the previous books in the series, it examines the happenings in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) in addition to the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). Titan Screwed shows the industry’s progression through the year in terms of on-screen storylines as well as the always tantalizing backstage stories. Most fans have heard the story of the Monday Night War so many times that they think they have a good understanding of it. However, like any field of study, there’s a general knowledge and then there’s a deeper knowledge that comes with exploring the subject closely. Just as there are casual fans who know their favorite stars in a promotion and their finishing moves, there are more knowledgeable fans who can tell you a wrestler’s entire history, the names of various moves being used, and the meaning and application of terms like psychology and heat. Likewise, with a discussion of the Monday Night War. One may understand the basics of what happened, but a book like Titan Screwed offers a chance to add depth and breadth to one’s knowledge. Take this for instance. Conventional wisdom has it that WCW was killing the WWF in terms of TV ratings, house show attendance, and pay-per-views. Dixon and Henry paint a different picture, pointing out how 1997’s pay-per-view buyrates were only negligible in difference. In terms of house shows, they argue that the WWF was selling more tickets than WCW and that the WWF was crushing WCW when it came to licensing and merchandising. Of course in terms of TV ratings, WCW was ahead, and Dixon and Henry point out how this drove a competitive Vince McMahon crazy to try a radical approach to changing his product. Titan Shattered showed the beginnings of McMahon’s attempt to increase ratings by presenting an edgier product in 1996. By 1997, this was in full force but McMahon was still unsure of how to emulate the success of ECW. Titan Screwed takes a look at the WWF’s late-night Shotgun Saturday Night program with Dixon and Henry pointing out how it was an “ECW Lite” that failed to catch on with more hardcore fans. The book continues the look at the escalating tensions between Vince McMahon and two of his biggest draws, Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart. Both Michaels and Hart were tremendous wrestlers but clashes in personality and lifestyle were making things harder for them to work together and creating incredible headaches for Vince McMahon, who had to deal with them. On one hand, McMahon had to deal with Michaels, the man he envisioned as carrying the WWF standard. Michaels’ charisma and undeniable skills in the ring made him a good candidate to be world champion. Behind the scenes, he was difficult to deal with. When it came time to do jobs, he seemed to conveniently suffer injuries. Backstage, he and his friends in the Kliq (Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, and Hunter Hearst Helmsley) made life difficult for anyone they didn’t like. By 1997, Michaels’ friends Hall and Nash were in WCW, leaving him to fend for himself. He was still playing games with other wrestlers, but he had no one to protect him. Bret Hart too was a fantastic performer (although not as charismatic) and beloved by WWF fans. Unlike Michaels, Hart was a loyal company man and he didn’t play the backstage games as Michaels and his friends were notorious for (as Dixon has detailed in other books, Hart was asked to join the Kliq but refused, not wanting to deal with their party lifestyle or backstage antics). In Hart’s case, he was loyal to a company that wasn’t necessarily loyal to him. After WWF lost Hall and Nash, Vince McMahon was careful not to lose any more top stars. It’s likely he felt he just couldn’t afford to. McMahon decided to make sure Bret Hart stayed with the WWF so he signed him to an incredible twenty-year deal. Hart would be paid well, end his career with the WWF, and carry on as a good-will representative. Over time, McMahon seemed to regret his decision. For years, the story has been that McMahon couldn’t afford the contract and told Bret to consider finding employment with WCW. Hart did sign, and as we shall see later, his departure was handled poorly, resulting in the Montreal Screwjob. Again, Dixon paints a different picture. He argues that McMahon wasn’t hurting for money as he told Hart and could have kept Hart under contract. He even argues that Hart made last minute attempts to stay with the WWF as long as he’d be used right, only for McMahon to dismiss his overtures. Why then, did McMahon encourage Hart to leave? One possibility is the amazing rise of “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. In hindsight, it’s incredible how Austin transformed from the career-killing “Ringmaster” character to the “Stone Cold” character that helped the WWF become a billion-dollar company. While there were other people involved in the WWF’s rise to supremacy, the “Stone Cold” persona played a large part. Did McMahon feel that he no longer needed Hart? You’ll have to decide for yourself. Towards the end of the book, Dixon and Henry suggest that McMahon was more than happy to replace Shawn Michaels with “Stone Cold” after Michaels’ career-ending (or so was thought) injury that shelved him after WrestleMania XIV. One interesting story involves Austin’s injury at the hands of Owen Hart. Hart’s botched piledriver nearly ended Austin’s career (and it definitely shortened it). Dixon talks of how Austin wasn’t too happy with Owen Hart, not because of the accident, but because Hart never apologized for the incident. On a side note, I recently learned (from another book) that Austin injured a Japanese wrestler in the ring several years earlier with the exact same move that injured him. That’s one tidbit I would have liked to have heard about in this book. Dixon and Henry do an excellent job of showing the various players whose star was on the rise. Men like Mick Foley, Rocky Maivia, and Hunter Hearst Helmsley may have struggled at times, but they persevered, all of them eventually reaching the main event. Dixon examines Triple H’s transformation from his Greenwich blueblood character to the D-Generation X reprobate he’d find great success with. The authors make it a point to include Chyna’s importance in establishing Triple H as a star. Triple H would find himself in a sink-or-swim situation when he was forced to take over Shawn Michaels’ role as leader of D-Generation X. Just as before, the book provides a lot of interesting behind the scenes stories. For example, one story has it that the Undertaker was waiting in the Gorilla position at WrestleMania XIV during the “Stone Cold” vs. HBK match to ensure that business would be done in the time-honored tradition. While HBK had legitimately (and seriously) injured his back, he’d cried wolf so many times with injuries when it was time to do jobs that not everyone was sure if he’d drop the belt to Austin. Titan Screwed doesn’t limit itself to discussing important events in the WWF. There’s also a discussion of the infamous “slow three-count” by Nick Patrick during Hollywood Hogan vs. Sting main event at 1997’s Starrcade. As the story goes, Patrick was supposed to make a fast count (insinuating he was on the take by Hogan) only for ringside spectator (and newly signed Bret “The Hitman” Hart) to intervene, protesting he wouldn’t see someone get screwed over like he’d been (referencing the Montreal Screwjob of course). What happened was that Patrick made a normal three-count, which made no sense for Hart’s protest. Dixon and Hart make a shocking revelation concerning the reason behind this. Rather than revealing it, I encourage you to get the book. I enjoyed how the book presents different points of view on situations. When discussing Starrcade, they mention that Sting gave Hogan carte blanche to determine the match finish, even though Sting was supposed to win. Sting pointed out that Hogan had taken WCW so far that he was thankful for everything he’d done. Hogan has got his fair share of criticism over the years for making WCW into the Hulk Hogan Federation so it’s interesting to see a WCW mainstay’s take on things. Just as before, the book provides a list of works referenced. Whether it’s interviews, shoot interviews, books, newsletters, and videos, fans can verify the information themselves (except for the interviews) and see if they agree with Dixon and Henry’s analysis of things. Now if they would only cite their sources (i.e. tell us where a particular piece of information is coming from in their references), they’d have the perfect wrestling book. Of course, a well-researched and cited book doesn’t always translate into an enjoyable read. As much as I appreciated the voluminous research of Jim Wilson’s book Chokehold, it remains the number one choice for insomnia relief. Fortunately, Dixon and Henry have developed an engaging style of writing that informs and entertains. Some people write so well that you don’t mind reading a discourse on the history of the letter “C.” In their case, they make an already fascinating subject positively delightful to read thanks to their style. Last year I noted my displeasure with the book’s paperback price, noting that it cost $21.43 on Amazon for a 266-page book. By comparison, Daniel Bryan’s 319-page book Yes! cost $17.76 for the hardcover. This year, the 278-page paperback retails at $21.04 at Amazon. Looking back, I realized I was wrong. The Titan books are published through Createspace, a publishing arm of Amazon. Last spring, I published a book through Createspace and learned a lot about the process, including pricing. First, you have to price the book higher than you might see other books if you want the book to get wide distribution. Second, although the book costs a bit more, it’s a professional production through and through. This isn’t some hack mimeographing a book. This is a well-written and well-researched book that provides detailed and entertaining analysis of an important time in professional wrestling. If you’re on a lower budget like me, get the e-book. If you’re an Amazon Kindle Books member, you can read it for free. In any event, it’s well worth having in your library. Kudos to James Dixon and Justin Henry for a well-written and well-referenced book that continues a detailed examination of a key period in wrestling history. Established writers should no longer rest on their laurels as Dixon and Henry are setting a very high bar when it comes to wrestling books, whether they’re traditionally published or self-published.

This book is filled with unbelievable amounts of information from the time period of 1997 through Wrestlemania XIV in 1998. For anyone interested in this period of wrestling this should be a fun read. The focus is put on the WWF, but the writer also weaves into the narrative important events that include WCW and ECW's part of the WWF story. Nearly every angle is covered, complete with pertinent back stories and supportive quotes from those who were there. My biggest complaints are the obvious bias against the Kliq, a heavy reliance on Dave Meltzer quotes(he's not the only "insider" of the business, and if he was referenced, then why not other dirt sheet writers?), and some outright incorrect info(for example the writer spoke of WCW wrestlers with creative control in their contracts when it's been stated by former WCW executives that Hogan was the only one with such a clause in their contracts). These flaws force me to wonder how accurate the book is. I have no doubt that the majority of the book is true, but not knowing for sure takes away from enjoying the book 100%. Overall I did enjoy it more than not, and found parts of it fascinating.

From the mid to late 1990’s, World Wrestling Federation engaged in a television ratings war with World Championship Wrestling. While WCW had an overloaded roster with high-ranking superstars, WWF had to desperately change direction if they were going to stay in business. Backstage drama between WWF’s top wrestlers Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart led to the infamous Montreal Screwjob, which sewed the seeds for Mr. McMahon’s tyrannical character, which sewed the seeds for WWF’s Attitude Era, a TV-14-rated period in wrestling where edginess and shades of gray characters eclipsed the cartoonish storytelling of the 80’s and early 90’s. By hook or crook, the WWF won the Monday night ratings wars and became the juggernaut we know as WWE today. The amount of detail and research that went into this biography is amazing. Not one piece of information in this book comes off as slanderous, just simple brutal honesty. I’ve always wondered what it meant when Shawn Michaels “lost his smile” and why it was considered disgusting at the time. It turns out he faked a knee injury so that he wouldn’t have to lose his WWF World Championship to his backstage rival Bret Hart in a credible wrestling match. I’ve also wondered what it was about the Melanie Pillman interview that made it win Most Disgusting Promotional Tactic of 1997 in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter awards. Turns out nobody wants to see a crying widow falling apart on TV while Vince McMahon tries to wash his hands of drug-related controversy. Accurately told stories like these prove that the wrestling business never was and never will be rainbows and skittles. So much anger and toughness runs deep in the veins of everybody who goes out to the ring to put on a show. The reason I mentioned not knowing much about lost smiles or Melanie Pillman’s interview days after her husband Brian’s death is because there was a period in my life where my mother wouldn’t allow me to watch wrestling (because of its “trashy” content). So when I read about certain things in Titan Screwed that I missed all of those years, I’m suddenly in the mood to watch them. Apparently, Bret Hart vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin at Wrestlemania 13 in a submission match is a five-star classic with hard-hitting moves, a splattering of blood, and a match ending that made both wrestlers look strong. The planning that went into the Montreal Screwjob months later at Survivor Series made me empathetic towards Bret Hart’s seething anger and his physical outbursts, which had to be contained by an entire locker room full of wrestlers. The way these two particular parts of wrestling history were written made the whole story seem novel-like. So intricately detailed, so much dialogue, and so much emotion went into writing this book that I might as well have been reading a classic novel. As much as I praise the picturesque details of some of the scenes in this book, there’s something about the writing style in general that slows the whole thing down for me. Maybe there’s too much detail. Maybe it’s the dry writing style of the minor parts of the biography. Maybe there’s too much verbiage and not enough action. Maybe it’s the fact that this is in its basic form a biography and not a tried and true memoir. Whatever the case may be, the slow reading pace put a huge strain on my eyes to the point where reading almost became a chore for me. Yes, this book is rich with information I’ve been longing to have since my mother forced me to stop watching wrestling as a teen. But just like with assigned college reading, the pace of the book can make or break the whole thing. In this case, the snail-like reading pace makes me want to downgrade this book to three stars instead of my usual four or five. While some parts of this book read like a novel, others read like a Plain Jane biography. There isn’t necessarily anything wrong with that as long as you know what you’re getting into. James Dixon and Justin Henry are two wrestling columnists I trust when it comes to analyzing this particular form of entertainment. They’ve done amazing work with websites like What Culture and Wrestle Crap. If you enjoy their work outside of Titan Screwed, you’ll probably get a good read out of this book. If you’re as anal about a book’s reading pace as I am, you might struggle with this one, but I urge you to make it until the end of the book. You can do it. I believe in you. A mixed grade goes to this simple and clean piece of wrestling literature.

Extremely satisfying! This book was such a pleasant surprise to a reader getting tired of the 'same old thing' with regency romances. I didn't want porn... I wanted a story that could capture my imagination, wouldn't butcher the time period, and had characters you could believe actually fell in love. This was the book to fit all of those criteria! Donaldson created such a wonderful world to escape into with excellent character development and storyline. This is a very well written book that you will find yourself falling in love with! I started re-reading passages immediately after finishing the book because I did not want to leave the story.Anticipating her next book greatly!Donaldson writes in a commentary at the end of her book that Georgette Heyer was one of her influences. I adore Heyer's books and Edenbrooke had a very similar feel with the exceptions that it moves a lot quicker and there is more of a love story in Edenbrooke than Heyer put into her longer novels (something I always wished for more of). As stated above, you really feel like these characters could realistically fall in love. The hero wears his heart on his sleeve while still being masculine and the heroine is daring and unconventional while still being true to the era and social constraints on a female.Highly recommend this book (one you will want on your shelf and your Kindle)!

I don't give out a lot of five star reviews but I don't think it's possible to over praise this book. It's clean, sweet, tension at its best. It was well edited and charming, start to finish. Even better, the author has taken less liberty with regency era rules than most regency novelists. I highly approve. The heroine, Marianne, is innocent and endearing even if she does blush a lot. When a visit to a country estate puts her in the path of Phillip, the heir of Edenbrooke, she has to choose between her happiness and her sister's. But first she has to understand her heart and trust Phillip's.And Phillip, where to begin? Yes please!!!! Could Donaldson have written a more perfect character? If I weren't already married if fall in love with him myself!!!!SEX: none, a few great kissesPROFANITY: noneVIOLENCE: mild

I so thoroughly enjoyed this book and everything about it! So much so, that I wish I could give it more than five stars. So much so, that I am reviewing it after it's been out three and a half years and already has 1107 reviews (and mine isn't needed). So much that I am reviewing it, not because someone asked if I'd be interested, but because I desperately wanted to. So here goes . . . Edenbrooke is a fabulous book full of laughs and tingles. Donaldson's writing is enchanting--the language both modern and yet perfect for the time period, a Regency novel that is comfortable, not stuffy. It's funny with a hint of intrigue. I don't know if she does so purposefully, but I enjoyed how Donaldson pays homage to Pride & Prejudice, Beauty & the Beast, The Scarlet Pimpernel, and even a little of The Princess Bride. Marianne is independent and a bit sassy, fun-loving and intelligent. Philip is kind and thoughtful, playful and genuine. He's also good at picking up hints and knows how to give impeccable gifts. He's the perfect hero, and I look forward to reading Heir to Edenbrooke. But what makes it different from other Regency sweet romance books that I loved? First, I especially enjoyed the circumstances of their meeting. Second, how Marianne is so unlike the women she is surrounded by and how that attracts Philip. And third, the dance scene. Ahh! Read it. You'll love it!

Author Mariana Zapata posted that she liked reading this book last weekend, so I one-clicked. She was right -- it's charming and fun. My favorite part is in the beginning, when Marianne is at the inn, trying to eat her dinner, and has to sing a milkmaid's song. It is difficult to think about girls marrying at age 17, which is what society intends for this heroine to do. Teenage girls are so new to the world, I am sure a lot of marriages (as this book shows) seemed like one wonderful thing and actually were another, more miserable thing. The character's twin sister, insensitive, frivolous and self-consumed, does a bit of an about-face at the end, in the name of happy endings. Some of the heroine's details -- the motion sickness, the fainting and crying, the small stature, the silly twirling, the accident-prone behavior -- are a little tiresome. Fortunately, her painting skills are a good talent, and her sense of humor shows up in the clutch.

This is a beautiful love story. I stayed up late twice to finish it the first time I read it (I've now read it many times and I've stayed up late each time lol). The heroine is very relatable for me. She's strong, but insecure at the same time. Smart, but sheltered. She didn't really know how to take a compliment and assumes she's being teased when someone flirts with her. The banter between the two main characters is great. It reminded me very much of my husband's and my "courtship" we got together despite me lol. I also love that both main characters have morals, something that seems to be lacking or even "out of style" nowadays. When someone asks me what my favorite book is, it's The Wall of Winnipeg and Me (they say the f-bomb in that a lot, so if that bothers you, then you may want to skip it), Pride and Prejudice, and this one. When life has me down, or I just want a good book to read. I come "home" to these books, and this is always the first of the three I reach for. I'm in my thirties, but I first read it when I was in my twenties. I've shared it with my parents and friends who loved it just as much as I did. I read it at least once every year. I highly recommend this book!

The Signals Are Talking: Why TodayÂ’s Fringe Is TomorrowÂ’s Mainstream, by Amy Webb

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of December 2016: At this moment, it seems obvious that we could all stand to brush up on our skills as prognosticators. And not just so we can avoid being blindsided by seismic elections, but because technology promises to continue its disruptive march through our societies and economies. What will cabbies do when cars are self-driving, and what will warehouse workers do when robots can pick, pack, and ship without lunch breaks and health care benefits? Forget NAFTA; the shift is toward Silicon Valley. But where to start? The Signals Are Talking: Why Today’s Fringe Is Tomorrow’s Mainstream is a good place. Sitting somewhere between Nate Silver and The Tipping Point, Amy Webb's book provides a practical guide for leaders - at any level - in the age of Big Data, offering tools for picking out the “true signal, a pattern that will coalesce into a trend with the potential to change everything” - and land on the right side of disruption. --Jon Foro, The Amazon Book Review

Review

"The clear, insightful, and humorous Amy Webb has crafted a rare treasure: a substantive guide written in a narrative that's a delight to read. While most futurologists want guru status through a few Nostradamus-like visions that never materialize, Webb modestly reports with depth and discipline, and creates a system and tools we can all use to better navigate the future. Through her deep research, specific anecdotes, and brilliant insights, she has performed the selfless but hugely valuable act of teaching us all to fish at the fringe." --Christopher J. Graves, chairman, Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide"Amy Webb, with insight and a big dose of pragmatism, shows how to clearly see the next big disruption and then take action before it strikes." --Ram Charan, advisor to CEOs and corporate boards, author of The Attackers Advantage, and coauthor of Execution: The Discipline of Getting Things Done"Forecasting the future is a challenging-and absolutely necessary-part of every leader's job. In this ambitious and timely book, Amy Webb shows not only how to identify actual trends and surprises emerging from the fringes but-even more important-how to do something about them so you can thrive in the face of the unexpected."--Craig Newmark, founder,Craigslist

#253,200 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Amy Webb is in my circle of acquaintances among the various futurists that populate LinkedIn, so when she announced her book The Signals Are Talking, I immediately added it to my Read Now list.Ordinarily, I can go through books like these in a few hours, but Ms. Web's book, even though relatively short, took me a few weeks. Why? Because every chapter required reading in small bites, thinking through the implications, jotting down notes and occasionally arguments, and in general studying it.What Amy Webb has written is no less than a primer on how to be a futurist. She lays down a coherent methodology for identifying the unusual suspects that are often at the forefront of technological and (perhaps less forcefully social) innovation, mapping out the signals as parts of broader trends, establishing time lines and viability, creating scenarios that tells the story of the impacts of this innovation, testing those scenarios with stakeholders and then building a strategy for organizations to best utilize this research to position themselves in the market. This book should be a must read for organizational strategists, investors, technologists, politicians, data scientists and science fiction authors, really, anyone whose business or area of concern is dealing with the deluge of change around us. It also helps to differentiate between what is "shiny", which often makes for great click bait but never quite materializes, and what are the deeper trends that often occur over decades, and are usually the result of multiple converging and competing factors.I would like to see a followup to The Signals Are Talking that digs more in depth into the realm of predictive analytics and how the two complement, and occasionally compete, with one another. Nonetheless I cannot recommend the Signals Are Talking high enough.

I was hoping this book would either teach me how to think like a futurist or explain all of Webb's insightful predictions about the future. Instead, it does a poor job of #1 and barely attempts #2. Aside from some interesting predictions about drones in the beginning and a few tidbits about AR in the last chapter, Webb spends most of the book rehashing how various organizations/people were able to predict the future successfully. Nintendo and Uber are among those examples. Hindsight is 20/20 right? I'm sure it wasn't super challenging to cherrypick the successful organizations and backwards-engineer them as great examples of past-futurists.Webb also does this backwards engineering with her own predictions, recounting how she predicted the trend in voice-based digital assistants. I'm more interested in her actual predictions of the actual future though. I already know voice-based digital assistants are big now - I'd rather she went out on a limb, took a risk, and told me what she thinks will happen in 2025 and why.Regarding the teaching section, there are some infographics and broad questions included, but it feels like reading a fluff online article or infographic. Pretty to look at but generally not specifically actionable. Who is the audience for this book? CEOs trying to predict the future themselves? (Doubtful, they would just hire her) Laypeople who want to predict the future? (You're not going to come away feeling like you have an action plan, only an idea of what Webb did in the past) Laypeople who want to read some interesting predictions and not a history of Uber? (Very light on the actual predictions, but they were the most interesting part).I did love Webb's memoir book, Data: A Love Story, and I think she can write well at a technical level if the ideas and overall topic are better thought-out and organized. If she writes another book along those lines, perhaps I'll give her writing another try.

Every job I've ever had has asked me to forecast the future. I've done projections for new projects, new markets, new initiatives. Forecasts beyond the next few months are usually BS.Except in some cases when they aren't. Many people look at those who "guessed right" and either think they are extremely brilliant - or extremely lucky. This book helps disprove both of those assumptions. This book gives clear direction for what to look for, how to analyze and review those data points, and how to string together those signals to theorize what may be coming next. Here in early 2017, we all need to be able to analyze what's on the fringe and see how it connects to make tomorrow's mainstream - sometimes only a few weeks away, and sometimes a decade.Highly recommend the book, and looking forward to sharing it.

I assigned Signals to my online digital media entrepreneurship class — seniors and graduate students at the Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University — a few weeks ago because I wanted the students to try future forecasting. I had the students articulate the signals that MTV/Viacom missed in 2005-7 that cost the company its position as the arbiter of what is in/hip/cool for youth culture. Separately, the students each had to make a prediction about new technology coming our way in 5+ years and articulate all of the signals that are talking to them now that are informing those predictions. The final assignment is for each distributed group to come up with a digital media business idea by using the methodologies in the book. I can’t wait to see what they come up with. The students enjoyed the book because it opened up a new way of thinking. The debates in the discussion boards over which of their classmates’ predictions were plausible and which were shiny objects were passionate and they drew upon the lessons in the book. Several students said they could not wait to pass the book on to friends and family. It is no small feat to get an online class super engaged in a complicated subject. I look forward to incorporating the book into my on-the-ground innovation course.

I enjoyed this book but not as much as the first one. Red Queen was a quick and fun read. But this book started slow and I felt it dragged on. It didn't have the same excitement that the first book had. I did enjoy that it picked up right where the first book left off. I hope the other books pick up and don't get stuck the same way this book had. Definitely not as good as the first but worth the read. I'm excited to see what Mare will do next!

*SPOILERS*Okay. So:Red Queen was good ! I really liked the whole idea of the divide between silver and red bloods and finished the book rather quickly, to be brief. Now, I was so excited for Glass Sword. Like, I got it the day it was released. So I really gave it a chance, I did. But boy, by page 40, I could not stand this book. Not just the book, but MARE.Let me break this down into what made this book a disappointing disaster for me.1) MAREI'm going to call her nightMare because that's exactly what she was throughout the entire book. What on Earth! I've never disliked a main character so much.It started out by her calling herself the 'lighting girl' literally 20 times within the first two chapters. Yes, okay, we get it. You're the Lightning girl, woopdy doo. Not only was that incredibly annoying, but her ENTIRE inner dialogue was a pity party that NO ONE wanted to be invited to. On every single page she had to remind everyone of how "broken" and "alone" she was and boo hoo. 'Oh look at me I'm the Lightning girl and my heart is ice and my soul is black and I'm so alone I can't smile or laugh because that girl is dead and I must become this and that and I must harden my already hard heart and push people away and I can't trust anyone because ANYONE CAN BETRAY ANYONE' (yes, we KNOW) and blah blah blah BLAH.Literally all she did was whine!! I'm going to add some direct quotes from the book at the end but I'm just paraphrasing what her inner thoughts were like. We had to be told what nightMare was feeling after every single little thing instead of being SHOWN. Show, not tell. Hello?? NightMare was also incredibly disrespectful, heartless, and distant. She didn't give two craps about her family and belittled Kilorn FOR NO REASON. Okay, so with her family, she left them at that camp place. The Tuck? I don't even remember and I literally just finished the book an hour ago. Anyways, then she gives NO THOUGHT to them AT ALL after that. In Red Queen she visibly cared about them! Even sneaking off with Cal to get to see them and now it's like she did a 180 360 2 million turn around and couldn't care less. ??!!!I cannot understand her reasoning for using Kilorn as a punching bag and literally treating him like dirt. No, garbage. She called him useless to his face and belittled him constantly. When Kiliorn told her how he felt about her romantically (that scene kind of came out of nowhere and was messy in general btw) she didn't care at all! Instead of being KIND to him about it, she was basically like, "Oh no, never wanted this to happen. Too bad for you Kilorn. I'm going to draw on my inner Mareena now because I don't know how to deal with this on my own." Ugh. NightMare did not deserve a friend like Kilorn who constantly forgave her for her disgusting attitude towards him. She honestly treated him so badly it was horrid to read. If that's how she treats her friends, it's no wonder that she has none.Another thing: nightMare acted as if she were the center of the world/universe/Galaxy. News flash: YOU ARE NOT. In addition to calling herself the lighting girl (UGH) every 2 sentences, she also reminds the readers that she's the most important, her ability the best and deadliest. Which, by the way, was not true. She was no better than Cal's Fire or any of the other newbloods. In any way, shape, or form. NightMare needed to humble herself and sit down. She acted as if everyone else paled in comparison to her. And since Victoria Aveyard didn't bother to give any of the other characters the time of day (getting to that soon), they really did pale in comparison to that whiny little girl.NightMare also complained about being alone. How completely isolated she was and blah blah blah. But she made herself that way! She didn't want to get close to anyone and was rude to them all, acting like a cold high and mighty leader. She kept saying that everyone was afraid of her, or, of the "lightning girl" (UGHHH) but why?? She never did anything to them to warrant their fear and so the whole thing was unrealistic. It was just an excuse for Victoria to not have to write any civil interactions between nightMare and any other character. I don't really mind, all of nightMare's interactions were painful anyways.I can't really say enough about how annoying nightMare was. She was the worst. Her inner dialogue didn't make me feel bad for her in the slightest. Because of her terrible character (such a contrast to who she was in Red Queen by the way!) I didn't care what happened to her. I've never cared less for a main character. Maven inwardly tortured nightMare? Oh well.NightMare is sad and lonely? Oh well.NightMare fell off a cliff? Oh well.Don't. Care. She was the main thing that ruined this book for me.2) The charactersCharacters are supposed to come alive. Authors are supposed to breathe life into them, to make them leap off the page and into our hearts. Did Ms. (Mrs?) Aveyard do that? NOPE.I knew something was missing, even from Red Queen and now I know it was the characters. It wasn't as noticeable in RQ but oh, was it noticeable here. They had no quirks. What kind of food do they like/dislike? What makes them tick? They had no goals that didn't revolve around nightMare and her little quest. All Aveyard did was give the characters one word personality characteristics:Farley- bold. (Speaking of Farley, wow did she turn translucent in this book. I can't believe Aveyard took such a strong, fierce leader and turned her into essentially, a nobody. :/ NightMare over shadowed her with her awful attention-seeking self. Yuck.)Kilorn-kind.Cal- humble.Cameron- fierce.Shade- funny.LIKE?Honestly because of their lack of everything, I sadly didn't really care about anyone. When Shade died it was upsetting but nightMare didn't care so neither did I. The family didn't seem to care so neither did I. The author skipped over every character just to get to nightMare who was the worst of them all. It was awful how little attention all the other characters got. And the newbloods ? LOL. Who are they? I don't know. What are their goals besides being used my nightMare? I don't know. All we know are their abilities, and I forgot their names as soon as they were mentioned. It was sad. It IS sad.3) The Villain- Maven. When you have a villain in a book, you want the readers to hate them. You want them to gasp and curl their fist, shout "how dare you!" In myopinion at least. Maven was the softest villain I've ever read. We were all TOLD about him and what he was doing, like once in a while the author remembered to mention him. Maven was completely behind the scenes which stinks because he's the reason nightMare is so broken and cold and alone and BOO HOO. The little notes he wrote were silly and childish. Even at the end when he captured nightMare (which I was not upset about by the way. Like I said, I don't care what happens to nightMare. I didn't care that she was humiliated in front of all the Silvers. Oh well, too bad for her. I'm glad Aveyard didn't do two pages of inner dialogue on what nightMare was feeling at the time and how alone and sad she was. Thanks!) I still didn't hate him. It was kind of like, "Oh, there you are Maven. Cool. Sorry about your mom by the way." (Side note, Queen Elara's death was not even written out. Are you kidding me? She gets whisked into the dust and fog and comes out electrocuted and burned and fried up. Aveyard writes painfully specific details about surroundings and places but not important scenes like the death of villain #2.) -__- Anyways, the villain wasn't a villain and that also weakened the book a whole lot.4) Repetitiveness/BoringWe were literally told nightMare was the Lightning girl 4000000000 times, and told how sad and alone she was. This annoyed me to no end. Seriously, no end. Aveyard spent so much time focusing on nightMare's inner pity party that all the action scenes fell flat because after every little thing, we had to know how nightMare felt about it. Who. Cares. There was too much detail to the point where I skipped over half the descriptions. Yawn.5) The romanceI understand why nightMare wants to keep Cal at a distance, after all that betrayal by Maven and whatever. But then she of course kisses him and sleeps in the same bed with him and so on, and then pushes him away for no reason like a spoiled brat. Just like Kilorn, nightMare treated Cal like crap. She even belittled him as well, literally saying "...he's not the sharpest sword in the armory." EXCUSE YOU. Who are you to talk?? No one.The fact that Cal overlooked her vile behavior and crawled back was also unrealistic. NightMare was so awful ( I can't stress that enough you guys) that it truly was unrealistic that anyone could tolerate her and would continue to socialize with her. Kiliorn and Cal did not deserve the treatment they received from nightMare, and she didn't deserve them, period. The romance was choppy mostly because nightMare treated Cal like a toy and only wanted him when it benefited her. Ugh. And I LIKE Cal. He is one of the only characters I like. NightMare doesn't deserve him at all. Mareena did, but nightMare does not. Now, those are the main 5 things that just made me want to throw my kindle while reading this book. Of course nightMare tops it all, she was 95% of why this was so frustrating to read. Seriously she was the worst. Anyways, here are some examples and my reactions to them.*NightMare repeatedly referring to herself as the "Lightning girl". Also thinking she is the best thing since sliced bread.Example 1) "I am the little lightning girl---living electricity, a lighting bolt in human form....I am valuable, I am powerful..."Me: Okay, yeah sure.Example 2) "Kilorn is looking to someone else now... he's asking the lightning girl."Me: Uh huh. Yup."Example 3) "....like every wire and circuit since I became the lightning girl..."Me: Oookay.Example 4) ""The lighting girl" echoes from them..."Me: Lol okay I get it.Example 5) "Afraid of the lightning girl..."Me: That's enough.Example 6) "...but I am the lightning girl...."Me: OKAY---Example 7) "....I was the lightning girl..."Me: I GET IT OKAY.Those are 7 of MANY you guys. MANY. But I won't torture you anymore. Now, some examples of nightMare's inner never-ending pity party.Example 1) "...and yet, I've never wanted to cry more. For them, I hold back. I curl inward and bleed inside, alone, so no one can see..."Me: Sorry? Why are you THIS upset again? Did you kill your own father under the power of your mother? No? Okay then lol.Example 2) "...sets in, joining the cold still deep in my bones. Normally I would shiver---but I am getting used to his feeling. I suppose I should get used to being alone too..."Me: And why? Oh yeah, because you push everyone away please be quiet now.(you know what you guys, she had so many pity-party poor me boo hoo incredibly annoying moments that I just can't. Let's just say I was in a fetal position halfway through.)This review has gone on along enough, and though I have so much more to say about the utter annoyance, frustration, and disappointment this book caused, I think I've made my point. I won't be reading book 3 or 4 because I doubt there can be a comeback after this. It's just a shame to see a series with good potential go to the pits. :/P.S: But Cameron/ Thank goodness for Cameron. Thank you for telling nightMare OFF. Too bad your character faded away shortly afterwards.

Other reviews express my feelings about this book pretty well. Basically the author took characters I actually liked, and made them into something that I very much disliked until the last 20 pages. In fact, I started skimming after page 200, I couldn't stand the wallowing. Aveyard writing style is one that I do enjoy, so no complaints there, just about what she did to the characters.

This book moves at a snail's pace and as soon as you think that finally some action has arrived it begins to slow again. Listened to the audiobook version and it was torture. The narrator spoke in a monotone voice, with what sounds like extra saliva in her mouth. She even seems bored reading the book as well. Never again. Done with this series, which is sad since I loved book 1- Red Queen.

So, well...meh. I really didn't want this to be a meh 2nd in a series, but I think that's just so hard to avoid these days, in this genre. I mean, what do you do with all of those characters between the heady premier and grand finale when you have a three book deal? Hence my disillusionment with most trilogies, esp. modern & esp. YA.Okay so here are the things that really bothered me. Mainly, the story didn't move forward much. We have a huge, predictable fight scene to begin with, an almost brush-off family reunion, a couple of silly run-ins with the New Sheriff In Town, and then about 450 pages of Mare & co. recruiting 'newbloods' or being incensed and chest-poundingly angsting when Maven has found them first and killed them. There are a couple of character fates that may have been meant to elicit emotion, but they're all so clearly visible from miles back that it was hard to care. And then the Mare/Cal story...just fingernails on a blackboard for me. How many times is she going to brush back his sweaty hair, and then tell herself, "Oh no, I can't be distracted!" How many times do we need to hear her repeat that "anyone can betray anyone," and Cal isn't Scarlet Guard so shock/horror, he might up and leave? Predictable and yet, at this point, I guess inevitable. The best part? The last 25 or so pages. FINALLY some things happen! Not really unpredictable things, and mostly not all that nice, but then again, it does move along. Enough to make me want to read the last installment. Actually, I'm mostly on board because of Farley's somewhat covertly conceded status, or what I assume it to be (nothing is really spelled out here, unless someone dies graphically.) But I am in no way tempted by the satellite novellas, and reading the last will really be for closure's sake. I so wish that this had been better done! And I truly don't blame the author, I think it it the publishing machine that demands sequels to best-sellers far too fast...sigh.

I bought this book because I needed to refresh my math skills. Also because it was so inexpensive. This is a very well crafted textbook. Granted I have already taken college level math, however that was a long time ago. With the examples in the book, I made immediate progress with my skills. It's outdated but that is alright because math has no expiration date. I am going back to college in the fall to earn another degree but I need to brush up on my math skills. With this book I can connect to solving Algebra again! I feel so pleased with the progress I have made in the past month, with the help of this text.
