Kenneth Pennington is Kelly-Quinn Professor of Ecclesiastical and Legal History at the Catholic University of America. He is the author of numerous works including Pope and Bishops: The Papal Monarchy in the Twelfth and Thirteenth Centuries and The Prince and the Law, 1200-1600: Sovereignty and Rights in the Western Legal Tradition, and is coeditor of the CUA Press series, History of Medieval Canon Law. Wolfgang P. Müller, associate professor of history at Fordham University, is author or editor of several publications in English and German including Huguccio: The Life, Works, and Thought of a Twelfth-Century Jurist. Compared to other test prep books I have purchased, this book is unique in that it offers TWO full-length practice tests -- one is contained in the book, the other is a PDF to be downloaded from the publisher's web site. This number of tests help students better prepare for tests, in this case the Florida Standard Assessments (FSA). Once they complete the same test several times, students begin to learn the answers and are no longer challenged. The additional test continues to properly challenge students' abilities.Florida, of course, isn't the only state which administers assessment tests. All states have them. They are likely very similar and test the same abilities and skills. My children have taken the Kansas and Texas state assessments recently. So if books aren't available for your state's specific assessment, this book should also be an excellent resource to better prepare for your state's assessment tests.This book in particular explains the Florida Standards Assessment test, and identifies the types of questions which appear on the FSA, including open responses, multi-select, graphic response item display, equation editor, matching item and table item. This book also explains how to best use the book for students so that they are not only familiar with the types of questions which will be asked but also the "soft" skills, such as familiarity, time management, strategies and such which build confidence. The authors also provide test prep tips, perhaps the most important of which is practice, practice, practice! An educator once said long ago, "Don't practice until you get it right. Practice until you can't get it wrong." Michael Jordan, the basketball star, also credits practice with his personal success and the success of his team. So these authors get it right!This book provides plenty of opportunity to practice. More than half the book, in fact, is devoted to practice. There are 34 pages of Operations & Algebraic Thinking, 7 pages of Number & Operations in Base 10, 9 pages regarding Fractions, 45 pages about Measurement & Data, and 6 pages about Geometry. The practice exercises in these pages feature an answer key and thorough, detailed explanations about each and every answer. Some adults may find some of the questions challenging as well.The practice tests contain similar questions as the exercises, and challenge students to compute area, read graphs, identify mathematical patterns, write expressions related to area, comprehend linear measurement, identify visual representation of fractions, perform rounding, complete 2-step word problems (I had some difficulty with these as a child, I recall), understand relationships between multiplication and division, find unknown factors, estimate and measure liquid volume and mass, and recognize shape categories. All measurements, incidentally, are done with the metric system of mm, grams, etc.I think you would be hard pressed to find a better book to prepare for the FSA math portion.

This test prep workbook is not only teacher approved but also matches state standards to allow children to practice for the FSA. The full-length practice tests will familiarize your child with the types of questions on the official test. There are also worksheets organized by concept so you can practice specific sections as needed.The layout is clean and organized and there is plenty of space to write in the answers if you so choose. The answer key and explanations are thorough and help you to understand not only what the right answer is but also explains the reason why the answer is correct.

Very helpful. Gives enough practice questions for kids to get better in the area that they need help. The only reason for giving 4 stars is because some of the answers in the answer sheet was wrong. I happen to be good at math and know the answers even without the answer sheet, however there may be parents that don't know or don't remember, and when the answer sheet gives some answers wrong, that can confuse the child, and that is not good!! Otherwise I find the questions helpful. Will recommend.

Questions cover the standards thoroughly. I would advise to use it to help a child get less worried about the test and to get a lot of practice and review. It helped with studying for test.

This book brings back a lot of scenes from the earlier entries which is great as it allows you to remember how much have our young heroes grown.We finally see a conclusion to many of the storylines that had been dragging for many books. And oh my how did these end! Spoilers below...Masema, Verin, the rebel Aes Sedai, Elaida, Garret & Siuan, Graendal (?)... So many loose ends tied....Egwene's encounter against the Seanchan was the epic consummation of my official liking of this character whom I only started to really like in book 11. Her development in this book is enough for me to like her as a character now. Not only does she display maturity, patience, control... She's a total badass... I got goosebumps reading about her second night serving Elaida... And her quick thinking during the Seanchan raid!!! She rocked this book...Rand Al'Thor... He got very big developments... His second encounter with Sehmirage brought him to the brink of destruction... We see a Rand overwhelmed by the weight of his duty... The end, while a bit on the cheesy end was beautifully written. The emotion, the stakes... It was a personal struggle that somehow felt as epic as his encounters with the Forsaken... He had the most difficult battle so far... The battle against his own soul... And love won. Beautiful.This is one of my top 3 now... There with Shadow Rising and The Fires of Heaven.

Yes Sanderson is different than Jordan, and in some ways that's a good thing. The story was slipping out of Jordan's hands like Saidar for Elaine during her pregnancy. Sanderson exerts control of the story and gets things done. Tarmon Gai'don starts to feel imminent rather than just being a misty figure on a distant horizon that never gets any closer.Egwene's battle for the white tower continues, and she is incredible in this book. She makes one of the most quotable statements of the series as her confrontation with Elaine hits critical mass: “I’d name you Darkfriend as well, but I suspect the Dark One would perhaps be embarassed to associate with you”.Rand's battle with madness and despair continues. He's on the verge of losing the last battle before it even begins in earnest. It wasn't as powerful a moment for me as some, but many readers were deeply moved by the process of working through that.Verin, a character I paid little attention to throughout the series, has an amazing moment of her own raising herself to the status of a critical player.Perrin and Matt are almost an afterthought in this book, and if there was any time spent on Elayne I've already forgotten it. Aviendha is set up for important personal growth that is yet to come.This book is filled with great moments and the story moves. It is the first time since book six that I thoroughly enjoyed myself almost the entire time.Well done Sanderson and RIP Jordan. Thank you for making it possible for your story to be finished.

Although not perfect, and overly long, this volume is an uncanny relief from the thousands and thousands of terrible pages from Jordan’s last five books. So many grand moments here, rich action rooted in realized characters. True conflict head on. Prose with syntax that doesn’t twist the brain with its incompetence. An erasure of wooden character tics and erasure of repetitive descriptions. Scenes that elicited both gooseflesh and tears. Yes, a welcome and pleasurable reprieve. Because of RJ’s plodding, I am now weary of this story and characters, impatient for it to be over, but I’m happy and pleased the denouement is in such a capable writer’s hands.

I hate to speak ill of the dead, but Brandon Sanderson taking this over is the best thing that could have happened. This book redeems all the suffering through 600 pages of descriptions of women's clothing and 200 pages of action in the last few. This book has as much action as *4* of the previous books combined.Thank The Light we have appeared to end the Faile gets kidnapped threads too. Worth 5 stars just for that alone! Also to RJ traditionalists delight, you will still find descriptions of clothing with special emphasis on degree of cleavage exposed, the women still manage to spank each other more often than at an S&M dungeon party, and they still have to be topless for various reasons LOLTwo favorite characters also make a comeback of sorts - can't wait for the next book.

I LOVE this book and remember it well from my own childhood ( still have my original copy )...but I wish it had been published in it's original format...which was quite a bit larger and with a finer paper stock.It is a reall classic with a wonderful story and delightful illustrations. Making it smaller lessens it's impact.I do realize that the book is now available in two sizes and this is the larger of the two...but I hope when I buy more copies of it next year for little friends during the Easter season...that I will be able to purchase it in its original size.Cheryl Webb Scott

I bought this board book for my 1 year old as an Easter book and she likes looking at the bunny and duck in the story. To my surprise, my 1st grader really took to the book because it has lots of sight words in it that she can read. She read it aloud independently with very little help, so it's a good book for beginning readers.The story is cute about a bunny who finds an egg and tries everything he can think of to find out what's in the egg. He falls asleep and while he's sleeping, the duckling came out and tries to wake up the bunny in the same ways the bunny tried to open the egg. In the end, they both became friends and were never alone again. Cute message and beautiful drawings. I love how colorful the pictures are and in the center of each page is an egg shape with the words and illustrations in them, bordered by beautiful flowers on each page. Certainly a great Easter book or a book for all through the year.

This was one of my favorite books as a child, and when I was looking for things to put in my son's Easter basket this year, this brought back so many memories!It's a large hardcover book, and the pages aren't too thin. The colors are brilliant and the drawings and story are just as charming as I remember them being. It's become one of my son's favorite books!

I remember this book from my childhood. It was one of my favorite books. I still have the original book I had (which was bigger), but it's in tatters.--obviously much loved I didn't realize back then that the author and illustrator both are award-winners, which, as a retired children's librarian I found to be a revelation at the time I discovered it. (Not all Golden Books have such credentials.) The story is charming and the illustrations are wonderful--hours can be spent with this book finding new things in the pictures. The new smaller format is probably more child friendly, especially for small children. I'm buying it as a gift now, so happy to have found it again.

Precious book. It was one of my kids’ favorites. I pulled it out of the box of books I saved from way back when, and my 2 1/2 year old grandson love, love, loves it! He asks for the Eggggg Boooook after they get off the plane and walk in the door. So sweet. He also really loves the Little Golden Book about Timmy (“I can do it by myself”), The Cat’s Pajamas and Caps For Sale. All four are great books that little ones love. Glad I kept them! The Timmy book is cheaper through eBay. Sorry Amazon, but shouldn’t have to pay a fortune ($29 plus dollars) for a copy of a small book (originally cost me .69 cents). My grandson cried when he went home and asked for the Timmy book, and they didn’t have one. So, I got a cooy of all 4 of these favorite books for him, since he loves them all. The Egg Book has really cute pictures and is about a bunny who finds an egg and wonders what is inside (a boy?), falls asleep, it hatches, and then nudges him to wake up, etc. It captures their interest.

The text was the same as the book that my children had, but the illustrator was different. This book didn't have all those adorable illustrations that the original book had, especially the final picture of the bunny and the duck hugging each other. I was disappointed.

This book is smaller than the one I had as a child, but it has the advantage of fitting on a shelf more easily. The illustrations are wonderful and make it a memorable book. I have loved this since childhood and I'm a grandmother now and give copies of this to my grands, nieces, and nephew, but I'll never give up my copy!

About the Author

Kerry Back is the J. Howard Creekmore Professor of Finance at Rice University's Jones Graduate School of Business and a Professor of Economics in the Rice University School of Social Sciences. He previously served on the faculties of Northwestern University, Indiana University, Washington University in St. Louis, and Texas A&M University. At Washington University in St. Louis, he served as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs of the Olin School of Business and was named a University Distinguished Faculty Member. He received faculty research awards at Texas A&M and at Rice University. Currently, he teaches introductory and advanced asset pricing theory to PhD students in the Jones School and in the Department of Economics. His research interests are in the areas of investments and market design, and he has served as an editor of the Review of Financial Studies, a co-editor of Finance & Stochastics, and an associate editor of the Journal of Finance and other journals.

This is a welcome second edition following an excellent first edition.But the most important question for Professors of Ph.D. in Finance or Applied Mathematical Finance and the students should ask is: Why Kerry E. Back’s Asset Pricing and Portfolio Choice Theory instead of Merton's Continues Time Finance, or Cochrane for Financial Economics. Or Shreve and George Pennachi’s Asset Pricing Theory?Kerry Back's clarity is the main utility here. He does spend a *lot* of time on the binomial model (discrete time) (Chapters 1 through 11, and then 18 through 22 for Options, etc.) before extending it to Continuous Time, but this grounding helps in the intuition. Merton’s weakness is it leaps (too quickly) into (rigorous, mathematical) Continuous Time. To be clear, the discrete time explains optimization over a one-period framework, with one consumption good and a selection of risky investments, so at the end of the period there is only wealth maximization for consumption. In a continuous time model, at each moment consumption and investment are rebalancing, and wealth maximization (could, theoretically) continue to infinity.New to this edition are extensive (hooray!) correction of the previous edition’s typos. To be fair, professor Back’s website always had a (regularly updated) errata sheet (www.kerryback.net/APErrata.pdf).Also new to this edition are welcome extensions of both pricing and preferences under skewness and kurtosis (both of observed and expected return choice sets), Jensen’s alpha and performance evaluation, Campbell-Schiller linearization and log-linearization, outlier disasters (n=large moment outliers), long-run risks, jump processes (better than just hand-waving over Poisson distributions, I might add), the Lealand Captial Structure model, q theory, Filtering (i.e. “learning”), the Glosten-Milgrom model (I’d never heard of it), Glosten model of limit order markets, and auctions (see the Numberphile videos on YouTube for more fun on the maths of auctions).But on the basics that it is imperative to be rock-ribbed and knowledgeable of, Back is excellent. For example, this is probably the best pedagogic layout of Ito's formula I have ever encountered, and this thoroughly covers Black Scholes, and asset pricing through Heleyete Geman's final extension.Back's work benefits from all previous work in computational and continuous time finance in that more (not all) of the mathematical notation is standardized.However, some of his choices for superscripts and subscripts strike you as odd, particularly if you've come from an MSF that emphasizes, say, John Hull's notation (most), or an MSFE (Carnegie Mellon) that emphasizes Merton's notation. Those coming to a PhD in Finance from Engineering or pure or applied Math will face a new, but slope familiar curve with comprehending the notation.So the admonition in Financial Mathematics that you really have to pay attention to the author's sometimes idiosyncratic choices for mathematical notation remains, but Kerry Back has (to his credit) extensively used that which is agreed upon or in general consensus in this volume, so it is in fact easier to read (n relationship to other books) than say, Merton or Oksendal.And so here a word on difficulty. This is not Oksendal. This is not Shreve and Karatzas. Those would be more appropriate for a PhD in Financial Mathematics, not a PhD in Finance.So in short, this is a great, clear, readable, and understandable Finance PhD level treatment of asset pricing that is a good choice for a variety of courses on discrete and continuous time asset pricing and financial economics. Some may argue it is too light for a Financial Mathematics PhD, but a solid basic or supplemental text, but this edition strengthens from the first and it fast becoming the go-to text in the field.

I am really amazed by the clear and intelligent reasoning of the book and I enjoy reading the book very much.
