I am a ham operator, so I have the equipment to listen to "shortwave" which used to be way more popular than it is today. However, in some countries, this is still a major way that information is disseminated. They don't have smartphones and high speed internet in the jungle! But maybe an AM radio that picks up SW.This book is an amazing collection of radio station listings from all over the world. It also includes a lot of info on USA based AM and FM stations. Its just fun reading to see the number of radio stations around the world. If you are interested in hearing some of these remote countries, this is your book.Very cool, even if not all that practical for most!

I had to get my copy of the book and the best thing about Amazon is that the book looks like it's fresh off the press. I have to say this book is very useful for short wave radio listeners, hams, and engineers and technical professionals in the radio fields. When I hear a station I get the book out to help me identify the unidentified radio station. Soon I am going to use this book and radio to create a log spreadsheet. The bonus about this book is that it now lists VLF time signal when I was looking that long wave radio stations from Europe. If you are into radio and serious about radio then you must get this book because it's a very good reference. I have owned WTRH since 1993 and I am going to continue to order it for life.

The 2013 WRTH delivers on its claim of being the most comprehensive and accurate listing of world radio and TV broadcasting organizations and stations. The first section covers domestic broadcasting services and the second section covers international broadcasting. There are complete listings of clandestine broadcasting organizations, Medium Wave stations listed by continent followed by a list of all known shortwave stations by frequency. Resource sections include listings of tranmitter sites (Lat/Long and city code), world time zone map, transmitter sites shown on several maps by area of the world, listings of radio clubs and data on TV broadcasting. The front matter of the 2013 WRTH has the usual ratings of receivers and articles on Children's Radio Foundation in Africa and Khmer Post Radio broadcasting to Cambodia on shortwave using Palau Islands as a relay site. WRTH is produced with high-quality graphics and paper stock and is an essential reference for anyone interested in worldwide medium and short wave broadcasting activity.

The WRTH (World Radio TV Handbook) is the quintessential guide to all broadcast radio and TV, and has been for decades. While still a guide to shortwave (international) broadcast, which was extremely popular here in the USA following World War II, it has now recognized that the Internet has taken a large bite out of transcontinental shortwave radio broadcast. It has adapted to this trend by continuing to stress the opportunities in what some consider antiquated broadcast technologies in regions where the Internet is not fully accessible, as well as the shear joy that one can have in tuning into distant stations without the need for a computer. The WRTH also covers the range of local and regional broadcast stations, which are currently popular and listened to. As such, it has kept up with the changing times. Here, in the NYC Metro area and along the New Jersey Shore, we saw the need to have old fashioned wireless radio that could be received from hundreds of miles away during Hurricane (Super Storm) Sandy. When many communities had no TV, Internet or cell phone service, if one had a battery operated radio capable of receiving distant domestic stations, they were in contact with news and information. They also got a feel for what people in other regions perceived in real time. The WRTH does an excellent job of listing all forms of broadcast radio from around the globe. Local, regional and international broadcast stations are listed, along with information as to their broadcast schedules, signal strength, direction and coverage. All forms of radio broadcast frequencies are covered -- Long wave (below 520 KHz) medium wave, which is called AM in the USA (520 to 1700 KHz) and shortwave, or what is now often referred to as high frequency -- all frequencies above 1700 KHZ. Local FM Stations around the world are also tabulated. Due to space limitations, AM stations with very low broadcast power are not listed individually, but these only involve small local stations.Even in this day and age, if one is so inclined, during the fall and winter months at night, when the ionosphere changes, much fun can be had by tuning to distant AM stations from as far away from New York City as Chicago, Fort Wayne, Detroit, Louisville, Atlanta, Charlotte, Cleveland, Washington, DC, Toronto and Pittsburg. This is known as DXing. It can be fascinating as well as informative to hear news from these regions, especially when important events in these areas are occurring, such as weather. One gets a real sense of what "the locals are thinking and doing." This can be a welcome change from sitting behind a computer screen while on Facebook or other social media. The WRTH also has articles regarding the latest trends in receivers and other equipment. With the advent of the personal computer, this has really changed the landscape. Very few manufacturers compared to even 10 years ago have stand-alone receivers on the market; it is now moving over to computer based receivers. The WRTH has kept up with this trend, and offers excellent advice. As a bonus, the WRTH has a web site, which has regularly scheduled updates to each edition. Here, one will find changes, station deletions and additions which have occurred since the edition went to press, which is usually in late November or December. All in all, the WRTH is the gold standard for all radio and TV communications receiving, and should purchased annually.

The WRTH contains a lot of very useful information for serious radio listeners, as well as certain radio broadcasting professionals. I used to get the 'Passport to World Band Radio" every year when it was still printed, but it ceased publishing several years ago. I did prefer its format, but the same information is in the WRTH, it's just harder to dig out.

In my teens and early 20s, I used to buy the big thick versions of this publication (looked more like phone books), since I was really into amateur radio (ham radio), and short wave listening, as well as broadcast band DXing. At first I was disappointed, thinking perhaps they'd removed the US medium wave stations from this volume and I'd have to purchase another volume for that information. But fortunately, they just moved that to the "National" section, and left the frequency range section for non-US stations, making it MUCH easier to find the non-US stations (due to the massive number of US stations in the broadcast band (medium wave). In short, well done, very useful, nicely organized once I spent just a little time exploring all sections.

This book is useful in Ham radio when selecting a frequency to be free of international broadcasting interference. It is also great when planning stations to listen to on a trip. I have been using this manual for nearly thirty five years and have not found another to equal it in information provided. It should be in the library of everyone who listens to radio.
