Considering that Eric has experienced having to adjust to a completely different culture as a teenager, therefore he's talking about first-hand experience. Also, the book is very easy to read because he mostly shares stories and "cases" from his own life, so it is very relatable.For all those who want to find out how to successfully worship and lead people from different cultures so everyone (well, at least the majority) is happy, this is a great book!

Helpful for facilitating discussions of intercultural groups or strong leaders with untrained listeners. Details of using "mutual invitation" method.How to involve all in non threatening manner.

Got me to think, which is what I usually hope for with such books. I particularly appreciated Eric's understanding and eloquent expression of the differences in how cultures view, respond to, and share power; and how that can greatly affect inter-cultural interactions. This was an approachable and quick read as well as an insightful one. I would recommend it for small groups to read and discuss as a good start for considering culture.

Eric Law provides some important insights concerning power distribution and empowerment strategies, especially germane in cross-cultural or multi-cultural settings. His unique Sitz-im-leben as a person not of the dominant culture, yet often one viewed as holding power, gives him important insight and perspective which he freely shares. Especially helpful was his concentration on the exercise of the theology of the cross as a corrective for the power-holders, and the exercise of the theology of the resurrection (empty tomb) for those from whom power has been withheld. Useful strategies accompanied theory in putting his thoughts into action.

Most of us take turns being wolves or lambs in different group settings. How to do this bloodlessly, even peacefully is Law's aim in life. His audience is Christian churches in our multicultural world.

Easy and fast read that brings up critical points. At times however it is very opinionated. While I did not agree with everything stated I did find this book to overall to be very worthwhile too read. The main focus throughout the book are very necessary to consider. How do we reach out in groups to people who do not want to speak for themselves.

I am the leader of a parachurch organization on a university that works with three different student groups - one that is predominately Caucasian, one that is Asian American and another that is African American. Law's book gave a lot of words and definition to what has been our experience in working through multi-ethnicity and the beginnings of racial reconciliation. Especially helpful has been the explanation of perceived power and how that effects dynamics within a multi-ethnic setting. I was also glad to see a chapter on how power redistribution can happen on a practical level (chapter 7). I have read a number of books on Biblical multi-ethnicity and this has been one of the most helpful. ("Divided by Faith" is the second best.)

A must read for anyone working with a culture different than their own. Opened my eyes to power imbalance

I am sincerely pissed that I was not provided a copy of this as a kid growing up. I have devised a work around to the whole "Not growing up with a father figure" issue. I have decided that Marcus Aurealis is my actual father, and Socrates is my great uncle and Thales is my grand father. I realize this sounds nutty to read but I honestly feel more in common with these thinkers then the absent XY chromosome donor.

I don't know who did the translation for this one but I found it very difficult to follow. This prompted me to look around and I found another translation by George Long (Thoughts of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus 1862). Even though it's not a recent translation, Long's version is often easier to understand. Compare the translations of the first paragraph for example:This version:Of my grandfather Verus I have learned to be gentle and meek, and to refrain from all anger and passion. From the fame and memory of him that begot me I have learned both shamefastness and manlike behaviour. Of my mother I have learned to be religious, and bountiful; and to forbear, not only to do, but to intend any evil; to content myself with a spare diet, and to fly all such excess as is incidental to great wealth. Of my great-grandfather, both to frequent public schools and auditories, and to get me good and able teachers at home; and that I ought not to think much, if upon such occasions, I were at excessive charges.George Long's version:From my grandfather Verus I learned good morals and the government of my temper. From the reputation and remembrance of my father, modesty and a manly character. From my mother, piety and beneficence, and abstinence, not only from evil deeds, but even from evil thoughts; and further, simplicity in my way of living, far removed from the habits of the rich. From my great-grandfather, not to have frequented public schools, and to have had good teachers at home, and to know that on such things a man should spend liberally.Having said this however, it's still worth comparing both translations which are free on the Kindle.

First, do we all recognize that the author of this text, Marcus Aurelius, was a Roman Emperor? If so, why have I not been forced to read this from a young age? This is quite possibly the most insightful, existential book I've ever read. Emperor Aurelius has given us wisdom in its purest form. This should be a manual for every human's life. Every sentence is mind-numbingly profound. This book is so good, that I might just have the entire text tattooed on my body. I cannot stress enough that the sagacity of this book is beyond what I have ever read. Definitely a must-read and a must-live-by.

He accepted the honor with the sole demand that Lucius Verus, his adopted brother, would share the seat with him.Sharing his seat of power is the one move that summarizes Marcus Aurelius’s entire life; the fear of power and the duty embedded in him through his interest in Stoicism, a philosophy that grounds itself on self-restraint, reason, and fate.His work is a reflection of his life, and the words inscribed in Meditations are the product of his own thoughts and his own experiences. Although it is written through an alumni's eyes, Yale being a private institution, there is still no excuse for what Yale has been teaching. They do not want input from parents or alumni -- just their money. As in the public schools where taxpayers and parents have a right to be heard, the failure lies not only with the school but with those who do not get involved. The influence of Yale can be seen in countless ways across the nation, as with other colleges and universities. I wish someone would do the same type of book on Columbia Teachers College. Although many teachers are outright hostile to God, others simply ignore God. Both send signals to the students.

Tracing the trail of political correctness, Buckley's earliest work demonstrates why he was and became the conscience of conservatism, and the patron saint of patriots. If confused by how and why university's and culture have veered into lifestyle education, social engineering and opinion based public policy, one need look no further than this insipient critique to discover the cracks and crevices in the foundations of democracy, the results of which are all too apparent in America today, and indeed around the world. Buckley felt truth was not subjective, he courageously and consistently championed it in the face of all opposition, confident it inoculated both people and societies from demagogues and demi-gods alike.

His main theses are that collectivism, an older term which, as the author points out in an updated prologue, has morphed in "liberalism", is the dominant principle which guides the teaching of Economics, Philosophy and the social sciences, and secondly that, by any reasonable measure, agnosticism and atheisism are the prominent world views held by the majority of faculty and are in full evidence even in the Department of Religion. Not only do you sense his personal frustrations (being a Catholic and an advocate of small government), but there is a note of dismay at the apparent hypocrisy of Yale with respect to its alumni. The latter were encourage to shore up the finances of the college with their generous giving but were not to be given much say in the philosophical direction of the school, even though Yale paid lip service to the importance of the alumni in preserving its integrity and traditions. In fact, as Buckley points out, if the largely Christian and Jewish business men who made up the alumni knew that the Yale faculty was in large part atheistic (and sometimes highly scornful of Christianity)and believed that big government (specifically Keynseyism) was the answer to society's ills, there would have been far more calls for accountability. But sadly, the alumni were discouraged from questioning the philosophical direction of the college for fear of breaching the sacred veil of 'academic freedom' and from general apathy and lack of reasonable information. Buckley's book began an important intellectual discourse in the US about the direction of our culture. His wit and mastery of the written word is still fresh and entertaining.

I went to Yale Graduate School a decade after Buckley did undergrad. He wrote a wonderful critique of Yale--and every other modern university. The United States' educational system failed first in the universities, which turned out the teachers that failed to teach the primary, intermediate, and secondary school students--and the nation at large in the halls of business, industry, finance, government, and the arts. I agree with Buckley on why they failed.

Evan Baehr is the cofounder of Able, a tech company committed to growing the “fortune five million” small businesses around the United States with collaborative, low-interest loans. He’s worked at the White House, a hedge fund, and Facebook and is a graduate of Princeton, Yale, and Harvard Business School.Evan Loomis loves helping startups launch and raise capital, mentoring entrepreneurs through Techstars and Praxis. He heads up Corporate Strategy at Corinthian Health Services, and is the Founder of Tradecraft, a venture fund and consultancy for high growth businesses. His first startup was TreeHouse, a first-of-its-kind home improvement store specializing in performance and design. Evan also cofounded a national angel investment group called Wedgwood Circle. This is the question that Evan Baehr and Evan Loomis tackle in their debut book, an insider’s manual for entrepreneurs who want to raise a ton of money — from startup founders, to small business owners, to Kickstarters.Where this book truly shines is in the “Actual Pitch Decks” chapter (page 73). These decks have raised well over $100 million, and the founders' commentary makes it feel like you're reading a secret playbook for successful entrepreneurs. Why struggle for years in the trenches, trying to get your fledgling startup off the ground, when you can raise all the money (and friends) you need to prosper? After reading this book, it seems much easier (and wiser) to do the latter. One of the authors tells a personal story about how he raised over $2 million in a month for his idea. Not his business… his IDEA. I shudder to think of how many of my own ideas never got anywhere, simply because I didn’t know how to raise money. Now I know.If you’re wondering how to take your Lean Startup to the next level, this book might just be the answer you're looking for.

This book does much more than teach you how to get backed...I've worked in the private sector, federal government, and for non-profits, and this book is extremely useful to learn how to communicate and push big ideas in the most tangible way in each of those contexts. Since getting this book, I routinely find myself referring to it to guide me through my fundraising pitches for my non-profit and to help me define and communicate our core strengths amongst a crowded field of similar organizations. I'd recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their communication skills, sell better, tell better stories, design better graphics, improve branding, and influence others through their ideas. Even though this book should be a required addition to the syllabi of every business school, international affairs school, and journalism/mass communication school, students who use it to design their own presentations will stand out among the crowd. Great job on creating a simple, practical, and relevant guide to fundraising and beyond.

I'm an entrepreneurship educator who supports student entrepreneurs, and this text is the most thorough treatment of how to reduce a credible plan of action into a compelling pitch I've come across in 10+ years. While it provides the traditional pitch deck architecture you'd expect, it also contains valuable sections addressing: (1) the pitch deck slides you should have at the ready for the discussion you'll ave with potential investors, board recruits, and so on; (2) approaches to creating a narrative arc (origin stories, dramatic tension, etc.), and (3) typography, slide layout, and color theory that build design skills. Highly recommend this book. Note, too, that while Chapter 2 is a free download, it's abridged and omits the "extra slides" an entrepreneur will want handy.

With so many books like this having been written previously, my expectations were somewhat low that one could be written that would provide unique insights and a fresh perspective. I was wrong. First having bought the Kindle version, I consumed the raw content, but appreciated the book even more for its colorful charts when my sister gave me the hard copy. Evan Baehr and Evan Loomis have artfully developed a piece that should be used by any entrepreneur and even their advisers. Let's face it. Business plans are boring in the traditional 50+ page format. PowerPoint is now used to liven-up decks for pitches but most professionals lack the ability to develop the pictures that are "worth a thousand words". And, most decks either leave out the critical elements or drown audiences in far too many extraneous slides. This book offers structure, discipline and techniques. Not the only reference I would suggest - Guy Kawasaki, Brad Feld, Vinod Khosla, Sequoia Capital, and my professor, the late Jeffry Timmons have all written books and decks that one should use. But definitely you should add this to those esteemed VCs' guidance.

Get Backed has the dual advantage of distilling principles for successful fund-raising and also giving you an inside glimpse into the pitch decks of notable companies who have recently raised successful rounds. I can't think of a better way to get your creative juices flowing than to see the tools and techniques that other entrepreneurs have successfully used and to consider how they can be adapted to your startup as well. I have recommended the book to the co-founders of several companies I am invested in. I see the book becoming the "industry standard" guide for technology startups in particular.

Evan does a great job of presenting practical, insightful and common sense advice on a daunting topic: Convincing the world to invest in your idea.What to do, what not to do and how to do it. The book covers the deck, the pitch, the relationship generation and the eventual closing of the commitments.Of particular value is the insight gained from the presentation of a number of recent pitch decks to investors, how they were received and the behind the scenes commentary from the creators themselves.

A great, great guide on how to get not just a startup funded, but also ANY project or venture that needs funding. The key is how to build strong relationships with investors, of course, but also family, friends, vendors, and employees...which is crucial for leading a happy and fulfilling life, as well as for building a successful business. And....the book is full of wonderful success stories, which make it fun to read. Highly recommended for everybody, not just entrepreneurs!

This is a MUST HAVE for entrepreneurs. I wish I had it earlier.I was recommended this book by a successful and new entrepreneur. There is enough content there to make you feel really comfortable with the process of getting funding.
