Switchers is a fantastic book for anyone attempting to switch careers, but it is much more than that. The insights it offers are profound for anyone looking for any job, as well as those currently in a role who should be building and maintaining their network. What is so great about this book is that it balances practical advise with specific examples and templates to help you past potential stumbling blocks, along with a deep understanding of the psychology of the situation and empathy for the job searcher. You feel as if you have a friend showing you how to do it, encouraging you and pushing you to take action. For those of you, like me, who sometimes struggle with focusing on a target, she has a great methodology for developing your Plan A and explains why you need to pursue that and not Plan B and C contingency plans at the same time. She explains how the job market really works. A lot of books will explain why networking is so important, but Dawn gives you scripts to show you exactly how to do it. Every little step she takes to make this process more frictionless and to make you feel that you are not alone makes it easier for you to take action and ultimately find a new career, develop a personal brand, and build a robust network so that future jobs will find you. Dawn's process is proven. I am confident that this book can help you.

I heard Dr. Dawn Graham speaking on Sirius XM Career Talk about her new book with Nick Corcodilos ("Ask the Headhunter"). I was intrigued by how she brings the psychological insights on the mindset of the job/career seeker (e.g., overcoming obstacles of one's own creation) as well as insight into the mindset of the hiring executive (e.g., speaking to their fears of making a mistake).One of the things that made the book really helpful is the concrete examples. For instance, the example of a Pharma lawyer switching over to the business side of fitness tech product. This example brings the conceptual frameworks and exercises to life. For instance, the lawyer should make sure he "speaks the language" of the business people rather than talking in legal terms (about contracts, etc.).The author continues the example of the pharma lawyer throughout the book which helps to illustrate the exercises that are found in the chapters. One particularly good exercise is the detailed sub skills mapping of the current/former positions and then translating that to the new desired role. "Switchers" stresses the importance of framing and language to gain comfort with the recruiter. In addition to "speaking their language", the book also advises how to avoid shooting oneself in the foot by bringing up problems and raising red flags with the recruiter.While hard to enact, the intentional focus of 100% on the new, desired work vs. hedging the bets with a splintered approach is also a huge takeaway and well explained as to the rationale. The point is made that if you are confused in your intent, you confuse others and they can not help you and that your network is the best source for help. The point is also made about second level connections, who are the most impactful, but who can not help if the intent is muddle. Hard to do but great advice and clarity!Another highlight: the chapters on networking. These are written from the author's perspective as someone who had avoided it historically, and now has found a way to navigate and even value networking. I meet a lot of people that tell me, "they don't know how to network", and I can now point them to this book. Again, the author gives specific examples that demystify this process, e.g., you've been networking with your neighbors for years, exchanging recommendations on local handymen etc.Finally, for me, the price of the whole book is also worth it in the closing question that she recommends for the end of the interviews. I tried this and it yielded the most valuable insight of the entire conversation.

Really in a funk on how to get out of my current dead-end career so picked this up. I didnt really want to because I already got Parachute and Pivot and didnt think it could provide too much more insight on switching careers or even the job market in general. However, there is some really good facts, plans, and analogies in here that I can definitely apply to my job hunt. Definitely recommend even though I'm halfway through. I like how Amazon provides you with the digital version as soon as you buy it too.

Dr Dawn's book is a great read. The examples of creating ambassadors never made one feel they were using people, but expanding a wonderful base of friends. Friends you could meet at conferences and lectures. If I could compare the uplifting attitude and positive thinking of her style I would say she reminds me of Malcolm Gladwell. Read this book even if you are not seeking a new job or a different career.

She draws on her experience as a psychologist and a former corporate recruiter in describing the thought process from a hiring manager's perspective, and she shares strategies for how aspiring career switchers can use this information to their advantage. Very interesting read...Goes quickly, each chapter is like a short story. Great if you are interested in the origins of human life and what it is that makes us human.NOTE: Early in the book, Diamond makes an argument as to why humans and neanderthals could not have interbred. However, since this book was written (1990's), DNA evidence has proven that humans did breed with neanderthals.

What I fail to see mentioned in any of the reviews thus far is the fact that this book (`The Third Chimpanzee') is essentially identical to a previous version under a different title by Jared Diamond, namely," The Rise and Fall of the Third Chimpanzee: How Our Animal Heritage Affects the Way We Live" circa 1991. Interestingly, the reviews of that book (`The Rise and Fall') also fails to mention that it is a previous version of this updated book (`The Third Chimpanzee'). Upon comparison, the differences appear to be quite minimal; the general thrust is identical. Nothing about this relationship is mentioned at the Jared Diamond page either. However, please be aware that with very little effort the older version (`The Rise and Fall') can be found in a free PDF format.

Jared Diamond is a rare beast. He is an unabashed liberal but he transcends that and is as honest a scholar as one can find. He follows wherever the evidence leads him and reports it forthrightly. I do not think he has made the case for all of these themes but this is perhaps the best book of one of the most brilliant scholars of the human condition.

At this point, the entire world has read Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies and Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed. The question about The Third Chimpanzee: The Evolution and Future of the Human Animal (P.S.) is whether it is worth reading after reading Diamond's other two books.I have to say undoubtedly yes. This book, like the more recent ones, proposes answers to some of the biggest questions about humanity. Thus, even though the book is outdated, The Third Chimpanzee is great at both asking the important questions and explaining a process for answering them. The book covers everything from human language, sexuality, drinking, agriculture, and geopolitics through the analytical lens of evolutionary science. Thus, Diamond finds more interesting (and probably accurate) answers than those of philosophers, anthropologists, and political scientists addressing those same questions.Another benefit of this book is that it is actually broader in scope than Diamond's more recent books. The latter chapters of the book deal with the same subjects as Guns, Germs, and Steel (why some civilizations grew rapidly) and Collapse (how civilization risks its existence through ecological destruction). However, the first half of the book, deals with different topics, from evolutionary explanations for alcoholism to why humans have sex in private. In fact, if you only have time to read one of Diamond's book, I recommend The Third Chimpanzee as it includes a broader range.This addition of the book also includes a useful postscript which addresses some of the advances in our understanding of these topics since the book was first written.

It is obvious from reading this book that the professor has accumulated a great deal of knowledge from various sources including his own field experiences in places such as Papua New Guinea. The Further Readings section of the book also testifies to this fact. Jared Diamond has put all this accumulated knowledge to use in formulating the theories he has put forth in this book.Part one traces the development of this "species of big mammal" through its evolutionary history. He devotes a chapter to the Great Leap Forward -a topic of great interest to me. A number of things that profoundly affected the human species reputedly occurred during this interesting period.Part two discusses human sexuality, adultery, mate selection, and growing old. In many of the discussions throughout the book, an attempt is made to relate human behavior with some similar behavior found in the animal world. As stated in the book "parts one and two discussed the biological foundations of our unique cultural traits."Part three delves into how we are uniquely human and distinct from the animal world. Here he discusses the bridge or gulf, however you wish to view it, between language of humans and the ways in which animals communicate. He follows this with an interesting discussion of the development of language in human society. There is an attempt to relate human art to some animal precursors, a discussion of the mixed blessings of agriculture as well as why we engage in harmful practices.In part four we learn about the effects of geography on civilization, the Proto-Indo-European language (PIE) and development of the Indo-European language, the "linguistic steamroller," and genocide - an attribute notably ascribed to humans.Part five finally elaborates on the "Golden Age that never was" referring to the fact that "preindustrial societies have been exterminating species, destroying of habitats, and undermining their own existence for thousands of years." So this kind of behavior is nothing new to humans. There is a chapter on early life in the New World - the Americas, and finally, some thoughts on how the human species now has the capability of destroying not only themselves but even the planet.I rate this book highly based on the detailed and through coverage Jared Diamond has given to the subject matters involved. This book is a worthy read to gain some interesting insight into the extraordinary machinations of the human species.
