Very interesting discussion of left-right brain relationships in golf. Described me to a tee! Looking forward to re-reading it and taking notes.
Have you noticed not one five star review? Don't waste your money on this book. It is more like a long newspaper story on positive self talk, self hypnosis, mindfullness, and other psychological motivators without any instruction on how to use them. The author rambles from subject to subject and even admits he has attention deficit disorder. Where was his Editor?The book's jacket is really misleading because there is little detail and weak research. I was very disappointed.
I have never played golf however found the gems hidden in this book very useful - I especially like the suggested writing down of 3 nuggets at the end of each chapter! I have read a few of Stephen's books now and found that this one really made a few concepts click for me!

Although we had hugely different backgrounds we shared many of the same interests (including beer) and even though my left brain and his right took us on widely divergent paths professionally and geographically, we have remained brothers over all these years. We both have a rather annoying (to others) habit that any social occasion on which we meet very quickly becomes a philosophical exploration of how and why we and others we know well have taken the trajectories through life that have led us to where we are, what we have learned along the way, and where we may be headed in the future.I am almost totally indifferent to golf. Steve is not, but he asked me to read his book because it touches on some of the areas we have debated and discussed for many years. He may not agree, but "Play Magic Golf" is not about golf at all, any more than "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" was a Harley Davidson manual.Much of what Steve writes about is common sense, but that kind of common sense which sits elusively just out of reach for most people until it is pointed out, and then they can only marvel at how they hadn't seen it before. Much is analytical in a very left brain way (sorry, Steve!) reminiscent of the classical stoic philosophy schools. Some is speculative, some wildly speculative, but in a very challenging and thought-provoking way.Who would benefit from reading this fairly short book? Certainly golfers would, and probably other sportsmen, but as I said, it isn't a book about golf or even sport and it would be a pity if the readership was limited to sportsmen. It is a book about the intricate and fascinating way that the human mind is the warp to the weft of our everyday lives and achievements and relationships, and it is as relevant to physicians and plumbers, too. It is a celebration of choosing rather than simply reacting, and a handbook of exercises for strengthening the virtual muscles needed to direct the mind in positive directions instead of simply being an observer as it bounces randomly off the walls. Discussion of these concepts can all too easily descend into turgidity or sanctimony, but Dr Simpson avoids those traps to produce an enjoyable and often thought-provoking book.
Easy to follow book that will be a perfect gift for all my friends and family that play golf and other stress inducing sports, but I can see how it will help people with stressful jobs too - I found several of the methods useful for my day to day hassles with my newborn. Entertaining and enjoyable to read too.
Some things are so bad, they are good. I actually think everyone should buy this book and keep it in their locker to remind themselves that there are no shortcuts-no magic...only people out there who will promise you anything so you can be the next Tiger.I knew when I bought this book it would be a joke-It is the worst book on golf I have ever read. This "citizen of the world" claims to turn your golf clubs into magic wands.Seriously...right? Lots of good laughs here...but I've seen funnier...The funniest (and worst) thing I saw was actually a video of this bald German wack job professor who was extremely critical of Ben Hogan and anyone who teaches Ben Hogans fundamentals-because you see, Ben didnt know vat he vas doink....only Herr Professor knows the true secrets of golf! SCIENCE! PHYSICS!!BIOLOGY!!!and Herr Provessor vould sell magic shoes (starting at $500) and lessons for some golf swing he invented (that seriously looks like a silly disco move)...and... you guessed it...if you wear the magic shoes and he GUARANTEES tat this little dance move would make you the ...grrrreatest ....gulver ....un....de ....vurld! AXIS POWERS... Bwa ha ha ha(some assembly required, batteries not included, accessories sold seperately, void where prohibited, see actual warranty for conditions and details)Yeah, those Germans in the magic shoes are dominating the tour....My friends, there is no magic. A lot of time, hard work, discipline and dedication, and good coaching stands between you and the best golfer you can be.Dont get sidetracked by the freaks, the circus and the magic show....you dont have time to waste.
