This book repeats itself in many places, and the author makes numerous comments that would indicate she is an industry pretender rather than truly experienced.There are comments about, "this new interesting medium called the internet". The book was published in 2006? How can a forward looking person be so clueless?There are numerous comments about embedding and "hiding" fees in various charges. This is not a sign of a person who "gets" what is happening to this industry.The details about distribution, and regulatory filings are decent.This book could be a long article. There is very little information that is useful to an actual practitioner.

I was hoping for a clear, concise guide from an expert in the subject that is a good writer, but this was not the case. The book contains some good information, but the writing is not good and the information is not well organized (lots of wandering). The author also tries to be "cute" in some areas (Top 10 things you don't want to hear from . . .) and it just slows you down without any benefit. I would hope there is something better out there . . .

Prof Beard's SPQR is an excellent social history but not a good introduction to Roman History. She assumes that you have a reasonable grasp of the over arching political course of the empire, especially during the some 200 years of the imperial phase "covered" by this book. I say "covered" as so little is described regarding the political development of the empire. She chose to end her treatise during reign of Caracalla, but this is somewhat arbitrary as any details of his tyranny are given only in passing. She could have chosen to end her work during the reign of Alexander Severus, Commodus, or even Marcus Aurelius with no significant additions or omissions, though she does explain and justify her choice.That being said, it's clear that Prof. Beard did not set out to write a political history of Rome, but to focus on the lives of the average people that lived in the era and to tell, as best as she is able, their stories. Part of her intention in so blithely glossing over the doings of the emperors is to highlight how little effect the political realm had on the lives of ordinary people. This she does very well, despite limited written records as compared to the lives of the wealthy. Beard brings to life how ordinary people sustained themselves, what careers they may have pursued, what they may have hoped for and how they lived. I found all this to be very well told and an aspect of Rome too often glossed over in favor of the more flashy tales of intrigue that pervaded imperial roman politics.However, it needs to be said that Prof. Beard's work is a bit inconsistent in its intent and presentation. The first half dealing with the Republican era delves deeply into the political realm. She tries to highlight social aspects as best as she is able, but the poverty of primary records from that era limits what we can reasonably expect to know. Her lens focuses intently on Julius Caesar (as one would expect), the civil wars that followed, and the reign of Augustus. Tiberius and Caligula get passing mention but the remainder of the period "covered" is dominated by the social history, which again is fascinating and well presented, but the shift in focus is a bit jarring.If you are new to the study of Roman History, I would not recommend this book as its approach to the chronology is too haphazard to do anything other than confuse the neophyte. If, on the other-hand, you have a general sense of the historical narrative and are looking to flesh out your understanding and understand how Romans outside the imperial bubble lived, then you will be very well served by Prof. Beard's work.

I will admit that this wasn't an easy read for me. Although I have a deep interest in learning about the Romans, I found myself lost for the first half of the book. I started it over again after reading the first 100 pages, and this helped me some. Still, I felt that a dearth of knowledge hindered me from getting all that I could out of the book. So here's what I did get from it. First, archaeological finds don't automatically tell the whole story. There's actually quite a bit of thought that goes into telling a story the way it is thought to have happened. I do mean "thought to have happened" because there really isn't any way to know for sure, especially when looking back at something that took place over 2,000 years ago. Even when the evidence is strong, questions always remain. Secondly, the ancient world was full of brutality, uncertainty, and hardship. I'm not just talking about the murder of Julius Caesar, which was so brutal that it is still jolting to this modern reader. I'm also referring to other deaths that occurred by decapitation, crucifixion, poisoning, and one specific tale about a suicidal fellow who cut open his own stomach and pulled out his internal organs. After Rome was claimed by the emperors, there was always an uneasy alliance between the emperor and the senators. Although much of the blueprint for how emperors would rule was established by Augustus, this is one area that was still a question mark, and would remain so. While the author spends a great deal of time on the rich, she also tries to go beyond and give readers a look at the daily lives of the Roman masses. There are sections of the book that describe the jobs they performed, the housing they occupied, and how they spent their leisure hours. Unfortunately, the examples are few, simply because there isn't much recorded information available about the average Roman citizen. Thirdly, I learned that the same things that drive the world today are the things that drove the men of antiquity. The lust for power and the desire for riches hasn't changed over the millennia. Roman vices are our vices, but their virtues are ours as well. On a final note, even though this book is highly rated by critics, as a potential reader I wouldn't start with it until I had a solid background on the history of Rome, or essentially until I knew some facts. Armed with facts, this book becomes a much more enjoyable read, and readers will certainly get more out of it.

His encounters with a land that he has been taught is barbaric and his subsequent efforts to return to Japan shape him into an admirable character. Preus places readers in the young man's shoes, whether he is on a ship or in a Japanese prison. Her deftness in writing is evident in two poignant scenes, one in which Manjiro realizes the similarities between the Japanese and the Americans and the other when he reunites with his Japanese family. A sailor named Jolly and an American teen express the racism he experiences in America. Both of these characters gain sympathy from readers as their backgrounds are revealed, and as one of them comes to respect Manjiro. The truths he learns about himself and his fellow men and women are beautifully articulated. Manjiro's own drawings are well placed throughout the narrative and appropriately captioned. Shortly before starving, they are rescued by an American whaling ship. But it’s 1841 and distrust is rampant: the Japanese consider the whalers barbarians, while the whalers think of the Japanese as godless cannibals. Captain William Whitfield is different—childless, he forges a bond with the boy, and when it comes time for Manjiro to choose between staying with his countrymen or going to America as Whitfield’s son, he picks the path of adventure. This book is a wonderful story of a young Japanese man and his introduction to many new worlds. I learned so much about whaling and Japanese culture as I read. I loved the innocence of the main character: how open he was to the new ideas and experiences he came across. The characters and relationships that develop over the course of many years not shallow in the least. The fact that this is a true story (with actual drawings by the real main character displayed throughout the story) makes it all the better. This was in no way a quick read. Nonetheless, I was unable to end my day without picking up where I had left off and gently moved through the story. I will be adding it to our daughters' reading as we study Japan later this school year.

Very interesting, well researched, gave an intriguing description of survival and life on the high seas when whaling ships roamed the Pacific Ocean.Based on a true story of the lives of four Japanese teenagers. who eventually made an impact on US and Japan relations. Excellent reading for children and adults alike.

Read this to my 6 year old for bedtime over the course of a few days. He enjoyed it very much and wanted me to read several chapters every night. The chapters are very short and include what looks to be actual pictures drawn by Manjiro, the main character of the story. Good book for any child's library.

Set in the year of 1841, during which Japan closed its borders to foreigners and those who have left it’s shores. When Manjiro and his coordinates are finally rescued by an American whaling ship it opens his eyes to a world hidden to him by the Japanese government. Set over a decade,spent in America, Japan and in Margi Preus expresses the feelings of curiosity and eventual world changing decision making, as he pursues his dream of becoming a samurai despite his background. It deals with the topics of race and hereditary status, family and pursuing your dreams in Margi Preus’ brilliant debut novel Heart of a Samurai.

Heart of a Samurai is a great read for middle grade readers who think they don't like historical fiction. It is the story of a Japanese boy shipwrecked on an island in the South China Sea, rescued by an American whaling ship,trained to be a harpooner, then brought to the USA to be raised in MA by the ship's captain and educated in elite Massachusetts schools. It is based on the story of Manjiro, the first Japanese to step foot in North America, who as an adult returned to Japan and helped bring an end to Japanese isolationism. The story is adventure filled, but also realistically shows the racist attitudes and harsh working conditions for laborers during the 1800s. The descriptions of whale hunting are realistic enough to be stomach turning.

the author is a true artist in her descriptions of flora and fauna, places, the anatomy of the whaling ship, and her character arcs...bought it for my grandkids then purchased one for myself..

While the book is a fictional account of a true story, it opens your eyes to a history not well known. I had no idea that Japan's ports had been closed to the outside world for over 250 years. I had assumed that Japan had always been technologically advanced. This book will give the reader the desire to read more about Japan and her fisherman samurai. This is a must read! A great book club choice. It will open the group's knowledge. Our hostess served sushi and bean cakes.

I was and am thoroughly delighted to have read this book. It is not often, I find, that an author is so aptly able to bring an extraordinary character to life, fill in the emotions and moods of non-fiction, and tell a great story at the same time. As a teacher, I found this book to be perfect for class reading and discussion. I can already envision my students growing excited by the plot and intoxicated by the beautiful words. I highly recommend anyone of all ages to read this wonderful story.
