Review

Advance praise for RADICAL EVOLUTION“An eye-opening exploration of how cutting-edge 21st-century technologies, in embryonic form right now, pose the stark alternatives of a real life Utopia or Brave New World… Garreau has an eye for the anecdote that throws much of this Buck Rogers technology into compelling human terms… Excellent scientific journalism on the challenges arising from a real tipping point in human relations.” Kirkus (Starred Review)“How weird, how soon? That’s the question that dominates the debates about the coming of ‘post-humanity.’ With his customary journalistic acumen and wry humor, Garreau has the answer: much weirder than you imagine, much sooner than you expect.” — Stewart Brand, author of The Clock of the Long Now: Time and Responsibility and The Media Lab: Inventing the Future at M.I.T.“Joel Garreau lives well ahead of the curve — even the really big Curve he describes in these pages. One of our foremost chroniclers of change and historians of the future, he’s done it again.” — Bill McKibben, author of Enough: Staying Human in an Engineered Age and The End of Nature “Joel Garreau has hit upon something critical here, something most of us see daily and struggle to make sense of: That human technology may be advancing faster than our ability to adapt, leaving us ill-equipped to measure and manage the consequences. This is a timely, important book, and a fascinating read.” — Nathan McCall, author of Makes Me Wanna Holler: A Young Black Man in America“It isn't often an author gets to herald the biggest news in the last 10,000 years. But you'll get the full, uncensored, mind-blowing report here in this entertaining and surprisingly deep book.” - Kevin Kelly, author of Out of Control and Wired editor-at-large“Radical Evolution" is truly outstanding. I was hooked. It reads like a thriller, informs like a textbook, engages like a love note. Garreau is, truly, an artist.” - Eamonn Kelly, co-author, What's Next: Exploring the New Terrain for Business

From the Inside Flap

In "Radical Evolution, bestselling author Joel Garreau, a reporter and editor for the" Washington Post, shows us that we are at an inflection point in history. As you read this, we are engineering the next stage of human evolution. Through advances in genetic, robotic, information and nanotechnologies, we are altering our minds, our memories, our metabolisms, our personalities, our progeny-and perhaps our very souls. Taking us behind the scenes with today's foremost researchers and pioneers, Garreau reveals that the super powers of our comic-book heroes already exist, or are in development in hospitals, labs, and research facilities around the country -- from the revved up reflexes and speed of Spider-Man and Superman, to the enhanced mental acuity and memory capabilities of an advanced species. Over the next fifteen years, Garreau makes clear, these enhancements will become part of our everyday lives. Where will they lead us? To heaven-where technology's promise to make us smarter, vanquish illness and extend our lives is the answer to our prayers? Or will they lead us, as some argue, to hell -- where unrestrained technology brings about the ultimate destruction of our entire species? With the help and insights of the gifted thinkers and scientists who are making what has previously been thought of as science fiction a reality, Garreau explores how these developments, in our lifetime, will affect everything from the way we date to the way we work, from how we think and act to how we fall in love. It is a book about what our world is becoming today, not fifty years out. As Garreau cautions, it is only by anticipating the future that we can hope to shape it.

I'm just mind blown about all the information and how many people are being mentioned and talked about in this book, and I'm only just finishing the prologue!!This book is seriously worth the buy, and I can't wait to delve deeper into pages.Joel Garreau, you really made a solid book!!

Garreau sheds a definitive light on the subject of technology, and our current human endeavors that may not be known by the masses. Too often after college or grade school people separate themselves from academic reality, and even more so, especially in America, from reading in general. Some may say all of this is "fantasy" or science-fiction posited as constructive journalism, with those I have to dissent. This book gives credible references and attempts, by my interpretation, to draw forth a biased perspective. Those that naysay on the subject matter of this book are overlooking the fact that everything we as humans have created started off as a thought, and subsequent to that thought we achieved the fiscal support and intellectual minds to experiment, persevere and manifest that thought through trial and error into reality. I think by far, one of the most vivid elements of this book is how well it shows how close the gap of science-fiction and reality really is. The thing that elicits the most fear is the fact that these are the items of technology that are declassified or been around for a while; what about those that are classified? How far are we ahead in the realm of technology when it comes our inconspicuous technology? The book itself is a gem for the possibility of the future and current expeditions in technology, both theoretically and practically. All of this is presented in a very eloquent fashion that exemplifies Garreau's superb writing skills that can even appeal to the laymen. The level of detail that Garreau delves shows how well researched the book actually is. Within the first forty pages of the book there is a myriad of examples showing the foresight of the human population and its technology. This piece of literature is also a very good initial point to begin in reference to our technological endeavors, because it harnesses so much of it. With thirty-four pages of end notes and references, along with thirty-three pages of suggested reading, Garreau gives those that are interested in learning more about the subjects, and/or those interested in refuting his work, plenty of information to vet the information at hand. The only negatives I can bring are: Garreau over extends the need for "painting" the picture. There is a lot of excessive and unnecessary supplemental writing in the book, but in his defense, keeps it from being so dry; also, it lacks pictures, I would think that would be essential for investigative reporting. Some quotes that standout throughout the book that exhibit profundity on the subject at hand:Pg.42 "It is a snapshot of one small portion of one organization is working on in the first decade of the 21st century." - This is in reference to DARPA and their technological plans.Pg. 52 "...it's not clear that there are any practical limits represented by quantum physics, human ingenuity and the market...Whether our will can shape limits is the core issue..."Pg. 106 "In every civilization, in every era, we have given the gods no peace." - On human ingenuity and intellectIn the end this book caused me to revisit much more than my conception of technology. Our human culture is being transcended, by my opinion, by it and we need it to expand into the cosmos. Garrea's book caused me to think about a number of things and from this reading I have written thirteen pages of notes, so it definitely causes one to think. - D.R.Thomas

Just finished reading this book, and I must say that it is the perfect book for anyone who wants to read about cutting edge technology from the perspective of someone relatively unbiased. Unlike popular figures who promote or scorn the future of human science, Garreau explains the situation intelligently, using several examples from people with all different points of view. I recommend this book for anyone who wants a brush up on where technology is going, as well as anyone who might be interested in reconciling their current views with the other side. Everyone might not get the same things as me out of this, but thanks to Garreau's book, I'm beginning to come to terms with my place in where it looks like this world- and humanities role in it- might be going.

This book was written several years ago, but it's not dated. The concepts the author explores are still in development; following bleeding-edge technology news sites will show you that. He may be ahead of the curve a little bit in telling you about what kinds of impacts they might have in the future, but not all that much. It's important for us to look at and think about these possiblities now, so that we'll be prepared for them as they arrive. The book is well written and easily accessable. I bought a copy for my mother, so she could finally understand my fascination with GRN technologies and the coming social, political, and biological upheavals that will likely result from them.

The author presents a broad selection of other people's opinions on 'human enhancement' in a well-written, entertainng book. He does not perform a critical analysis of those opinions, just presents them for you to use to make up your own mind. Because the author doesn't really show strong opinions of his own, this book will likely not be as controversial or polarizing as the books of the people's opinions contained in the book.I enjoyed this book and it is a good overview, but I enjoyed more reading the original books and articles.

IMy mother had the hardbound book. It had a nice, fabric covered blue cover with a silver imprint of the first chapter heading illustration. I loved the book as a child. When I grew up, I asked my mom if might have the book someday. She gave it to me. I have actually treasured it. So, when I was looking for a thank you gift for our catechetical team at the church, and with this being the 100th anniversary of the Fatima events, I wanted to give this book. I don't care that some people say it is a child's book. My mother and I enjoyed it as adults. I don't care that some people say it is not 100% accurate. It's a story, for heaven's sakes--not a documentary. How in the world can you write a story about something historical without adding dialogue, etc. If a person wasn't there, you do the best you can with the story as it has been told and you add what you need to make sense of what children may say to one another. Anyway, in searching for this book, I couldn't find a hardbound version like my book, and I don't mean that it had to have a blue cover with silver imprint. I was just looking for a hardbound closer to that--a presentation style book. If I couldn't find that, then this paperback is really as close as I could come. Sad about that. So, I couldn't give it five stars because it was not exactly what I was wanted. The content of the book is really what matters and it is a beautiful story of a miraculous series of events.

A very thorough and orthodox book on Fatima. My only concern is that the language was very old-fashioned and difficult for the average modern child to understand. I tried using it for read-alouds during catechism class, but most of the kids didn't get it, and I had to paraphrase.

Fatima story is a historical event that many people during the 6 months of apparitions were present at.And about 70, 000 witnessed the Miracle on October 13, 1917The Miracle was even written about in the secular newspaper which had just the day before scoffered about the apparitions. Many journalists, atheists, people of science and even those in the surrounding areas of the event that where not present at the actual site witnessed the same miracle.Unfortunately this particular book is written as a novel, rather than based on the historic facts.Dialogue added, motives added, and events edited to own imagination. Our Lady of Fatima by WalshMore about FatimaFatima 2017Good books for adultsThere r 2 small b ooks written about Francisco and JacintaUnfortunately with children books authors often take too much licenceIf u don't mind this as a novel instead of historical then it is very well written and easy to understandExamples:Francisco is made to seem like he didn't like to pray the Rosary. No where has anyone said factually that Francisco was any less interested then the girls in praying. In fact Francisco seems more directed to mental and contemplative prayer than the girls.Purely fictional addition. The children r said to spend time telling each other stories before the apparition of the angel but no where is that mentioned in factual books. They were playing games. Plus Lucia was the one that was a good story teller to entertain younger children when she helped take care of them.Jacinta and Francisco r said to say that Lucia saw the Lady too because they didn't want to be punished. No recall of their parents threatening them with punishment, just that mom and siblings didn't believe them. And they said they were telling the truth and Lucia could vouch for them.Just things that don't match up with anything written in historical books on the subject. And this just in the beginning. Which combind makes it more novel like when these things could easily been kept in line with the adult historical books written.

A beautiful book!!! Required reading for my daughters Catholic school. A lovely book about the Blessed Mother. Love this book so much, highly recommend to anyone!!!!!

My daughter loves all of Mary Fabyan Windeatt's books. This is no exception. She's a wonderful writer for elementary school children. Even into junior high. I've used these books to create puppet shows for younger children as well (using the dialogue). One of the best writers for Saint stories!

Mary Fabyan Windeatt has a real gift for writing and touching your soul with the amazing and important lives of the saints. Her books are amazing, and this one is no exception. I don't know who gets more out of her books: children, or adults! This book is absolutely wonderful and worth every penny. I even bought a second copy to loan to people! So many people don't know about Our Lady of Fatima. Her messages are so timely and extremely important. A must read!

I have enjoyed reading this book as much as my daughter. We have been talking about our Mother and how we can ask her for intercessions and this book is nice to show her that these children had FAITH to ask our Mother and to do penance for their sins and the sins of the world.

Very interesting and inspiring true story of events in Portugal in 1917 involving 3 young children. Great book for children to read and learn about history. Also good for parents to read to them.
