This guy was AMAZING! I had no idea he had such a life. He fought in the American civil war - who knew. His plan to open Africa to commerce was well intentioned. He thought trade with Europe would improve the lives of Africans but as we know, that didn't work out so well when Europeans went in raping, pillaging resources and enslaving people. But anyway I'm glad I read this book. He was a heckuva writer too.
I was thoroughly enjoying Stanley telling the story of his early life and looking forward to when he travels to Africa. I got to page 210 and it skipped to page 337. Chapters 10 through most of 16, including when he finds Livingstone and his early days in Africa, are missing. This is appalling.
Stanley is not only describing his life and all his difficulties especially at the beginning of it, but along this description gives us his teachings, learning things the human race under the facts that happen. His love of writing, for which he has great ease, make the book a true amenity and bring not only knowledge derived from their hectic lives, but also recreation that is what is sought to read. Of course, the key moment of the book, the expected time, is his meeting with Livingstone and his famous "Mr. Livingstone I Presume" but the book is full of many similar stories. Highly recommended.
