I found this book quite addictive; I was pleasantly surprised by it. Honestly I was only looking forward to a light fictional read that would satisfy my curious mind, but Joust certainly did more than that.The story takes place in a civilization that can be compared to the old Egypt; this is a nice change from other books about dragons where the adventures take place in somewhat medieval atmospheres.In this book we meet Vetch, he is a young boy that has lived worse than a slave for a long time since his village was conquered, fortunately he was found by Joust Ari (dragon rider) who gave him a dignified job and was a great example for him that managed to get him to have the will to live again, and to imprint the image that he is worth it.Vetch is developed nicely throughout the plot; I was pleased to find myself angry when he was angry and I really felt bad about his past, he is a character that the author managed to wonderfully create and give a defined image. I found myself loving Kashet as if he was a real puppy and Ari is a character that I hope we get to meet again in the other books.For all dragon lovers out there, you won't regret reading this book.I will go read the next book now!
This book is yet another dragonrider story in a similar vein to Dragonriders of Pern or Temeraire. The worldbuilding in this one is beautifully done, it was nice to see a fantasy story not set in yet another vaguely medieval Europe setting. Rather, this one takes place in an ancient Egypt-like culture which is fascinating to read about. I would say the world-building is where this book really shines. The main character Vetch is a little bit one dimensional, and seems to become good at everything he does a little too easily. However, that doesn't stop it from being quite an entertaining read. I think it is probably best for a younger audience, but grown-up readers will enjoy it as well. The overall tone of the book, though certainly not the plot, reminded me a bit of Harry Potter. All in all, a good coming of age story.
Very good book. While reading you can't help feeling sorry for Vetch as his life is described. You find yourself hoping along with him when it seems that things are getting better and really fear for him when he is trying to hide his growing dragonet. I love how he grows from hating all Tians simply because they are from Tia into someone who no longer sees people as being an enemy just because of where they were born. A lot of people criticizing this book say it's because Vetch was too young to be so mature. Vetch admits to himself that he doesn't actually know how old he is, when he tells Haraket he is 11 he does so because he is afraid he will be turned away if he is much older even though he suspects he is closer to being 15 or 16. He doesn't know his age because his birthdays were not celebrated since he became a serf at the age of 5 (I think that it said 5 might have been older, not 100% sure) it was a daily struggle for him just to survive, little things like his birthday and the year were not kept track of.
I have read some of Lackney's books over the years and decided to pick this one up as I have been in the mood for some dragon fantasy. I found it to be quite an enjoyable read and was barely able to put it down to get other things done. I like that there are a few characters that have some depth to them. Ari especially who one can genuinely read as being a good man who is caught in a time of unreast when horrible things are being done. He is able to look past what is happening right now and see a larger picture, and in this way is able to become a mentor to Vetch who should be considered his enemy. Vetch's character is sweet and believeable for a boy who is "ten or eleven" as he says.I also like all the descriptions about dragons. The book goes into the care and training of the dragons and also some about the wild dragons. The relationship that Ari and Vetch have with the dragon Kashet is very sweet and I especially like the part of Vetch with his dragon. I won't give the end of the book away except to say that it was very touching and that I can't wait to read the next book. While this book may not be amazing writing I found it a very enjoyable read!
As per the usual, Mercedes Lackey does an amazing job of creating a unique world that really pulls readers in. I truly enjoyed the attention to detail and development of Vetch’s character from a scared, downtrodden serf to a rebellious, confident dragon boy. The book describes the unique, Egyptian-themed world in great detail, and I felt truly vested in both Vetch and his Tian master by the end. I definitely recommend this book, and I look forward to reading the next in the series.
The characters were well rounded, complex beings, the world of desert and ancient egypt-type civilization. Good from a serve viewpoint. I have re read this book a couple of times a r still like to i.here's myself in it.
I admit, I'm a Mercedes Lackey fan, so buying this book was a no-brainer. I have since reread it, and the rest of the series, many times (I had to replace this one because of wear on my original) and have recommended them to lots of people. I love the dragons in this series, so different from the ones of Anne McCaffery, but just as compelling. And the character of Vetch is complex and very human. Misty has done her research, too, incorporating religion and just enough real historic fact of Pharonic history to make this very realistic, while retaining the fantasy with the dragons.Highly recommended for the young reader (between 10-16) because they can certainly indentify with Vetch, but also recommended for readers of fantasy of any age!
