This is a remarkably thorough and comprehensive overview of the recording process for home recordists. It is loaded with useful, detailed, PRACTICAL information, such as compressor settings, equalization, microphone placement etc. It is also written in such a way that you can follow the whole process from beginning to end without having to fill in the blanks by yourself as is the case with some other books on home recording. It's not just for beginners, but also great for people with some knowledge and familiarity with music recording. Highly recommended as your first (maybe only) book on recording.
I like the beginning part of the manuel but it seems to go into a lot of technical words and me I am just about c average when it comes to getting the big picture. It is full of promise though. And I appreciate the wording however I learnt my music basically by ear. Never took a music course in ever my whole life. I am a hurrier in reading books. Because I just like to have everything explained to me. But still want details. Can't help it. Like Robert Blake once said. Infinity in the palm of you hand etc...
There is a wealth of information in this book, but I'm not so sure it's for dummies. I have no background with sound equipment, but I don't consider myself stupid. Having gone through a few chapters, I think that I will benefit from it over a period of time. For now, at least, I'm not planning on buying any other books on this subject. I should point out that I'm only an amateur musician and mainly interested in making backups for small gigs as opposed to making a commercial cd. I have a lot to learn about sound and related equipment and this book has been helpful so far.
Bought this book to increase my knowledge in home recording and thats what it did. Great book and great author, the book gives you and intro and half step of everything you should know about home recording. The price is well worth it and the information is vital. I read this book to try to clear up some confusion I was having on my experiments with home recording. This book takes it slow and easy, step by step. I was able to get a thorough understanding of the basics. With the knowledge I gained from this book, I was actually able to go back to several songs we had recorded not knowing what we were doing, and remix them into decent recordings.
I have been recording a little on my Fostex MR8 and a little on my computer. I have a few audio editing programs, but was just fuddling through. I didn't know the difference between a dynamic mic and a condenser, didn't know how to properly mic a cabinet, or even which frequencies bring out the best aspects of an instrument. This book solved all of those programs. If you need detailed info on computer recording or MIDI, go elsewhere. If you want a good smattering of audio, digital, computer, and MIDI recording, this is the book for you.
I've just started recording on my pc on a budget, this book has definitely provided some helpful tips. Since I'm recording exclusively on the pc, it has alot of information I don't need since it covers a variety of recording methods. The Dummies book for PC recording may have been a better choice for me, but I haven't read it so I can't be sure. If you're just getting started like me, I don't think this book will answer all your questions. But along with some internet browsing and some questions at your local music store, this book is useful so at least you have a basic idea of what to ask and look for.
According to my 17-year-old guitar and drum playing son, this book has lots of useful information for home recording. He's got a Tascam 8-track recording deck in the basement and has used this book to learn how to better use the Tascam. I guess I'd recommend it to anyone who does home recording. If my kid finds it useful, I'm sure you will, too. Unless you're already a home recording expert.
