About the Author
Mel Bartholomew was the founder and inventor of the Square Foot Gardening method and the author of All New Square Foot Gardening, the best-selling gardening book in America for a generation. The guide has sold 2.5 million copies since Bartholomew wrote the book in 1981. He hosted a PBS TV show for five years, and then was telecast for three more years on the Learning Channel and Discovery Network. Bartholomew presided over the nonprofit Square Foot Gardening Foundation, which encourages every household around the world to have a small garden and eat fresh, healthy vegetables that are uncontaminated. He passed away in May, 2016.

I bought this because I wanted to start a very small garden. I had no idea what I was doing, so by chance I happened to have a friend's husband build a 4 ft by 4ft frame, then researched how much to plant. Along the way, I discovered the SFG method and this book. I did not use Mel's mix at that time, but used bagged garden soil instead. It is too early to tell how things will come out. If I did another garden bed, I would try his formula as it likely works better. As for the book, it reads very well, and was very informative. I really loved his planting method and wished I had seen that before I planted my own. He gave tips on handling small seeds and how to properly space things in this type of garden bed plan. Lots of good stuff; I would recommend to anyone.
YEARS AGO I FOUND MEL'S SWUARE FEET GAREN BOOK AND IT DISAPEARED...THIS IS GREAT BECAUSE IT ANSERS EVERY QUESTION YOU COULD THINK OF AND ENOUGH "BASIC INFO" TO START FROM SCRATCH FOR THIS WONDERFUL WAY TO GARDEN!
For years, I have used and adapted the old Square Foot Gardening methods. This book has a lot of changes! There are several improvements and this book is better than ever. The methods in this book can be especially helpful for urban gardeners who don't have much space and aging gardeners who don't find it as easy to do the work any longer. There are additional tips for vertical gardening and tabletop gardening that were not in the original book. I also like that there is no longer a dependence on native soils making this doable anywhere you live.

Even though I already have four other books on SFG by Mel Bartholomew, this book gave more reasonng behind how he came to some of his conclusions. Excellent companion book to the others.
Well written and informative. Referred back to this book several times since purchasing it earlier this year. Would suggest it for anyone wanting to have a small box garden. I have had two crop turnovers since early Spring and plan for one more before winter. The soil blend recipe really did work!
