This is a great short story for one of history's most unique naturalists. I especially like the introduction to Darwin's family and all the celebrated genius contributing to other fields setting the course to the final choices Darwin made. Why the timing to release his famous book" On the Origin of Species" occurred as it did, and how that changed Darwin's life for his relationship to his wife and friends. For those who have not read through the entire works of Darwin, this puts the reader in the correct time frame and attitude of the 19th century towards his genius. Some books are worth re-reading, this one I have added to my list.
A well written account. It is always good to read when the writer does such a good job.

Very concise review of his life and work. Johnson is always a thorough investigator and elucidated the subject and his work in a fair and clear way.

So far I have read Darwin, Jesus, Socrates, Napoleon and Churchill. As many of you know biography and history are my favorites. It's funny that I never heard of Paul Johnson. His style is unique. His research is impeccable. His books are brief and, more than any books I have ever read the books give you feeling you have spent time with and know the person. They also showed me things I never knew much less thought about. Frank
Quite a good account of Darwin's life but no description of the theories themselves.
Typical Paul Johnson excellence in popular history. Love the details on Darwin and his life that he includes. An easy but worthwhile read.
This book should be read by everyone but especially anyone who has religious conflicts with Darwin’s theory of natural selection. You need not be conflicted. Darwin will help you resolve your issues. You can keep your faith while adding to your perspective of life. I’d suggest reading this book along with Rebel Giants by David Contosta and Angles and Ages by Adam Gopnik. The latter two bring Abraham Lincoln into the story because Darwin and Lincoln were born the same day, February 12, 1809. The comparison and contrast of their lives is interesting for more than just their common date of birth.
